Breakthroughs Counseling & Recovery is an outpatient rehab that offers substance abuse treatment near Jacksonville, Florida. The center opened in 1993, the brainchild of Cindy Falor, a mental-health counselor, and her partner Tony Fiser, a social worker. Between them, they have more than 60 years of experience treating mental health and substance abuse issues.
Treatment
Breakthroughs Counseling & Recovery offers Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for adolescents and adults. Groups meet four to five days per week for three-hour sessions and both morning and evening programs are offered. Clients also attend at least one individual session a week, though more are available upon request (for an extra fee). No medication is prescribed at Breakthroughs Counseling & Recovery, but it welcomes those with dual diagnoses into the program; it also offer referrals to area psychiatrists. Because it only has outpatient programs, it also refers to detox and sober living facilities and inpatient treatment options as well.
The adolescent program is similar to the adult program with a few exceptions. First, teens only attend three group sessions per week. Second, treatment includes recreation therapy, with an emphasis on age-appropriate activities like outings to water parks and movies. The teen group is also exposed to the local youth recovery community through guest speakers and meetings. Although not standard practice, random drug tests are administered at the request of parents.
Breakthroughs Counseling & Recovery understands close friends and relatives are also impacted by addiction, and so offers a family component to address the issue. The family program meets on Thursday nights and Friday mornings. Breakthroughs Counseling & Recovery holds on-site AA meetings on Mondays at 11 am and Alanon meetings Thursdays at 6 pm. If clients don’t want to go the 12-step route, they are referred to local Celebrate Recovery meetings.
Extras
Breakthroughs Counseling & Recovery also offers DUI classes and counseling services for the LGBT community, those in the military and married couples. They have an RN who specializes in bariatric counseling and eating disorders. While alternative therapies are not a usual practice here, music and art therapy are also available in some cases. To build a sense of community, the rehab has quarterly pizza parties and an annual mixer for alumni and current clients.
