Located in Opelika, Alabama, The Reprieve is a residential treatment program for men struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders, all owned and operated by Bradford Health Services. Like most of Bradford Health Services’ other programs, treatment is 12-step based and includes personalized care, spiritual counseling, life skills development and other related topics. Stays at The Reprieve are typically longer than average residential programs, lasting for about six months. There is a separate program for women at The Reprieve.
Accommodations and Food
The house itself is a sprawling manor with room for approximately 16 residents in shared bedrooms. Each room is shared between two to three clients with twin beds, dressers, nightstands, lamps and natural lighting. In addition to the bedrooms, the home also has common areas, a game room with a ping pong table, a music room, an office area and outdoor walking paths. The facility also has a kitchen on-site. Throughout their stay, residents are expected to help cook and prepare their own meals.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients go through a thorough intake and assessment process to help the staff members determine their needs. While on-site detox services are not available, those in need can get referrals to nearby programs as necessary. Unlike many other residential programs, The Reprieve is something of a cross between intensive treatment and sober living; those who sign up to stay at the facility typically stay for a year.
While each participant’s care plan may vary somewhat, treatment typically consists of group and individual therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT. The organization also requires all residents to work a 12-step program throughout their stay. As something of a hybrid program, participants also attend life skills groups and family therapy while looking for a job and volunteering in the local community. The program also teaches clients how to shop and cook for themselves as well.
Although some support for basic issues like depression and anxiety may be available, those with more severe dual diagnosis issues may need to seek additional help elsewhere. The staff at The Reprieve consists of CADCs, case managers, housing supervisors and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Other elements of the daily schedule include a morning meditation and rotating recreational activities, mainly through visiting the nearby Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatics Center. The facility offers many different activities including swimming, free weights, basketball, racquetball, an indoor track and more. Once participants have completed a primary care plan, they can also work with staff members to develop discharge and aftercare plans as necessary.
Overall, The Reprieve provides a long-term option or men looking for a safe and stable environment to pursue recovery. Throughout their stay, all residents form close bonds with one another while attending therapy, working a 12-step program, learning life skills, finding a job and volunteering in the local community. Although anyone who attends must be willing to commit to a full year, The Reprieve remains a strong resource for those looking to complete overhaul their lives.
