Bradford Health Services: Extended Care Review

Based out of Warrior, Alabama, Bradford Health Services’ Extended Care program is a longer-term residential treatment option for both male and female clients struggling with addiction and a dual diagnosis. While the organization’s main program lasts only 28 days, extended care goes for 60 to 90 and includes a deeper focus on root-level issues and co-occurring disorders.

Accommodations and Food

Extended care services are typically offered at Bradford Health Services’ Warrior Lodge campus, which has a total of 188 beds available in separate cottages and sits on 80 wooded acres. Each of these cottages holds approximately 15 residents in shared bedrooms housing two to three clients each. Bedrooms come with twin beds, dressers, nightstands and basic decorations. Cottages also feature common living areas, cable TV and full kitchens. Unlike some of the other locations, clients in extended care are asked to cook and prepare their own meals with food provided by the facility.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, all clients go through a thorough screening and assessment to help the staff members determine their needs. On-site detox services are available for those who need them as well. Once stabilized, all residents attend full days of treatment which run from 8 am to 10 pm. All care plans feature both individual and group therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. The teachings of the 12 steps also play a major role in each client’s recovery, with meetings held everyday. Other groups cover topics such as life skills, relapse prevention, mindfulness training and trauma processing.

As previously mentioned, dual diagnosis support is available along with medical and psychiatric support. The staff at Bradford Health Services’ extended care program consists of LPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs, RNs, physicians, doctors and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.

Extras

In addition to the clinical approaches, clients also participate in holistic care methods such as art and music therapy, and yoga. Bradford also facilitates adventure therapy to help clients build self-confidence under extreme circumstances. Though these activities rotate, they can sometimes include ropes courses.

Other special services include a family program, which meets Monday through Wednesday from 8 am to 4 pm. Aftercare—in the form of further outpatient treatment through one of Bradford’s many facilities—can also be arranged.

In Summary

Overall, the extended care program available through Bradford Health Services is a well-rounded, longer-term residential treatment option for clients who want to go deeper into issues driving addiction. All care plans include evidence-based therapy, holistic support sessions, treatment for co-occurring disorders and medical oversight. Though the cost of treatment may vary by insurance, those seeking longer-term care would do well by considering this program.
