Bowen CenterBowen Center Review

Bowen Center opened its doors in 1957 as a mental health clinic serving five counties in north-central Indiana. It now provides professional substance abuse services at offices in Columbia City, Fort Wayne, Huntington, La Grange, Plymouth, Syracuse, Wabash and Warsaw. Each of these facilities offers outpatient rehabilitation based on the principles of SMART recovery and evidence-based treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Bowen Center assesses each potential client free of charge. If detox is necessary, it is available through their psychiatric inpatient facility in Warsaw. The Inpatient Unit is staffed with nurses, mental health technicians, an activity therapist, a psychiatrist, a social worker and a director at a client-to-staff ratio of five-to-one. Clients remain stay for three to four days, after which they have the option of moving into outpatient treatment.

The length of the outpatient program and number of meetings each week depends on an initial assessment and individual plan of action. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) clients meet with their individual therapists five days a week to start and then taper down. In addition they attend multiple group sessions and addiction classes and receive psychiatric care for co-occurring disorders. Clients typically remain in treatment from six to 10 weeks, participating in anywhere from 10 to 52 group sessions, depending on court mandates, evaluations and other variables. Some clients attend three meetings a week at first, then two meetings for the remainder of the six-week regimen. Others attend one meeting each week for 10 weeks; others multiple times each week. Each client is evaluated as treatment progresses and charged on a per-session basis, according to what they can afford.

The substance abuse program is not 12-step based, instead subscribing to the principles of SMART recovery. Treatment modalities include Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), relapse prevention, Seeking Safety and the Matrix Model. MRT is designed to help clients learn healthy social behaviors and to start making decisions from “higher levels of moral judgment.” Some of the topics that are covered in the program include: honesty, trust, acceptance, relationships, helping others, goal setting and maintaining positive change.

There is a special women’s track that focuses on domestic violence, codependency, childhood issues and areas of grief and loss in addition to core addiction services. The adolescent program helps teens deal specifically with issues of self-esteem and peer pressure. They also learn stress management and how to properly process emotions.

Bowen Center’s substance abuse staff consists of chemical dependency specialists, therapists, nurses, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists.

Extras

The family program at Bowen Center is called codependency treatment; it’s a specialized, outpatient program for relatives. Trained counselors use education sessions and therapy to deal with the codependency issues that result from having an addict in the family.

Bowen Center offers individual therapy for problem gambling as well as any necessary psychiatric services. It also introduces clients to Gamblers Anonymous and the Indiana Problem Gambling Awareness Program. Addiction services are also available for eating disorders, tobacco cessation, sex addiction and other impulse control behaviors.  These treatment programs include individual counseling, doctor support, nutritionists and medication to treat co-occurring disorders. Therapists use DBT, MRT, Seeking Safety and other modalities for clients with behavioral addictions.

Bowen Center also facilitates intervention services, community substance abuse education and an employee assistance program that teaches supervisors how to recognize substance abuse issues and refer someone to counseling.

In Summary

Bowen Center stands out from the rehab crowd by offering comprehensive addiction services founded in SMART recovery rather than the 12 steps—this could a plus for people not interested in surrendering to a Higher Power. Potential clients can be comforted by the wealth of therapeutic modalities, educated professionals and specialized treatment.
