Boulware Mission was founded in 1921 in Owensboro, Kentucky by five elementary school teachers. A member of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAAP), the organization provides faith-based outpatient treatment to homeless or near-homeless adults in western Kentucky.

Treatment and Staff

Boulware functions largely as a court-diversion program and incoming clients must have a referral from an attorney or judge. If the client is deemed a good fit for Boulware, a counselor helps determine a treatment plan that fits their needs. Clients who are unstable or are going through withdrawal are referred to outside detox facilities.

Boulware offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that consists of both group and individual counseling. While the exact length and intensity of the program is based on counselor assessment, most clients are in treatment for four to six months and attend at least two group sessions a week. The sessions are three hours long and usually have around 12 to 15 clients. Boulware aims to address individual circumstances  and uses CBT, education, sharing and relapse prevention strategies. Individual therapy is scheduled as needed. Boulware also introduces the 12 steps during treatment and strongly encourages clients to attend outside AA and NA meetings.

The organization offers additional support for clients with co-occurring disorders via individual sessions with a mental health counselor.

The staff consists of CADCs.

Extras

Boulware offers a 52-week aftercare program designed for clients who have completed the IOP. It consists of one group meeting a week that focuses on maintaining sobriety.

Additional services include a sober living program in a large home in a quiet neighborhood in Owensboro. The house services over 300 clients a year and has a total of 40 beds for men and 13 for women. This program also provides three meals a day, plus snacks. Clients are also offered personal hygiene items, emergency clothing and bedding. Although the length of the program varies, the average stay is 71 days.

In Summary

Boulware Mission offers affordable outpatient and sober living programs to the homeless or near-homeless . As a flexible alternative to residential treatment, the organization’s extensive aftercare option also provides clients with solid support after they transition out of the IOP.
