BodyMatters Australasia Review

Australasia, an Oceania region that’s made up of Australia, New Zealand and some islands of the Pacific Ocean, is home to BodyMatters. BodyMatters is an eating disorder treatment facility that provides counseling services and support groups along with body positive events. Programming is evidence-based and holistic, and led by experienced and caring therapists who work to improve clients’ relationships with their bodies and food.

Treatment and Staff

Programming is designed for an array of eating disorder and body dysmorphia issues that include anorexia, bulimia, binging and purging, post surgery complications, trauma that lead to an eating disorder and comorbid conditions. There are monthly groups for eating disorder recovery support and one that’s specifically designed for parents, loved ones and partners who care for those with an eating disorder. Additionally there are affordable individual therapy options provided by an intern psychologist who provides those services in the office and remotely through a program called Zoom and Skype, which to date mainly serves Australians and Americans without them ever setting foot in the office.

One of the most commonly used treatment approaches at Body Matters is the Maudsley Family Therapy method. This modality is primarily used with young people who are struggling with anorexia. It utilizes their family members as the main support system. This is broken down into a three phase system in an outpatient setting that takes up to a year of treatment. The first step focuses on the client gaining weight again within a safe environment. This is often comprised of group family sessions that include family meals so that the staff can observe behaviors around food. The second stage addresses returning the control of food intake to the client when they get to a healthy and manageable weight. The third and final step revolves around the client regaining a sense of self without the crutch of an eating disorder, and separately having the parents take time out for themselves to reconnect as a family unit.

Speciality programs include workshops for clients who are addicted to exercise, handling procrastination when it comes to addressing issues, dealing with intense emotional distress, and assertiveness skills. Except for the workshop these are usually individual therapy options that are skills-based, using CBT therapy methods. Additional treatment approaches are DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Schema Therapy.

The staff at BodyMatters include a group of clinical psychologists, dieticians and intern psychologists with extensive training in the field of addiction and eating disorders.

Extras

Events are scheduled throughout the year for clients and their family members like mindfulness and yoga. These are usually six week courses that offer ways to find balance and focus within the clients lives. There are also consultant services and programming that can be integrated within schools.

In Summary

BodyMatters is the first and one of the only treatment facilities that focuses on eating disorders within Australasia. It offers prevention and educational services in addition to comprehensive counseling. Utilizing evidence-based approaches and caring practices for their clientele, it’s truly an asset to the communities it serves.
