Blue Sky Treatment Center Review
Blue Sky Treatment Center is officially opened in 2013. It’s a family-operated business whose president boasts many years of sobriety. The treatment facility is located in Lighthouse Point, Florida, just outside Fort Lauderdale, with a sober living in nearby Deerfield Beach. For adults with substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders, Blue Sky Treatment Center offers small-group, intimate recovery at a variety of levels, from a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), where clients are required to live in residence, to general outpatient services.
Accommodations and Food
Individuals participating in the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) are required to live at the Blue Sky Treatment Center sober living residences. Staffed 24/7 and located in a townhouse apartment complex called Palm Village, each residence is gender-segregated, clean and carpeted, and comes equipped with lots of amenities like cable TV, high-speed WiFi, a dishwasher and newly renovated bathrooms. Each residence houses up to four people, rooms are shared, all linens are provided and laundry service is available free of charge. Palm Village also has its own pool and is conveniently located close to the beach.
The kitchens in each unit are modern and fully equipped for preparing meals. Clients cook for themselves on the weekends, but while in the PHP, they eat healthy, well-balanced meals at the Blue Sky Treatment Center facility.
Treatment and Staff
Blue Sky Treatment Center welcomes adults, ages 18 years and older, who are suffering from drug and alcohol dependency and often co-occurring disorders. Treatment is intended as a next step for someone who has already gone through detox or even some level of inpatient care.
The most structured level of care at Blue Sky Treatment Center is the PHP. The program is available five days a week for six to eight hours a day and residents usually take 30 days to complete the program. Clients take part in an average of six group sessions per day and group size is kept to a maximum of 10 participants. At this level, clients must stay at the sober living residence and Blue Sky Treatment Center provides transportation to and from the treatment facility as well as to daily 12-step meetings in the community.
A standard day in the PHP begins with a morning motivational group, followed by a psychoeducational group and then a therapeutic process group with clinicians. An individual session follows the lunch break. Clients then participate in a 12-step oriented group that covers topics like relapse prevention and how to make the most of a relationship with a sponsor. Afternoons are dedicated to various wellness activities and off-site 12-step meetings.
The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) lasts anywhere from three to 10 weeks long and is considered a step down from inpatient and/or PHP for clients who have a safe home environment, a functioning sober support system and a relationship with the 12-step community. It’s five days a week for three hours a day but eventually tapers down to three days a week, depending on each client’s progress. Days start with a routine check in, 12-step study and a stress and anger management group. The conclusion of each session is always peer sharing and support. For PHP clients who are stepping down in treatment, continued residency at the sober living house is highly encouraged, when appropriate.
The Outpatient Program is designed for people with only mild to moderate co-occurring mental health symptoms and who already have a significant period of sobriety under their belts. These clients are, for the most part, functioning productively in their work, school and personal lives, but need additional support beyond 12-step meetings. Blue Sky Treatment Center does ask outpatient clients to commit to at least one group session and/or one individual therapy session a week, for 10 weeks.
Family sessions are arranged on a per client basis throughout all levels of Blue Sky Treatment Center’s outpatient care.
There are usually about 10 full-time staff members at Blue Sky Treatment Center, most of whom are with the clinical team. In addition to the founder and president, there are three Master’s-level therapists, a case manager and two additional recovery specialists. Many of these team members are in recovery themselves.
Extras
Blue Sky Treatment Center wholeheartedly believes healthy activities are crucial to maintaining a sober life. Equine therapy, meditation, fishing trips, nature walks, yoga, movie outings, art therapy, gym visits and sporting events are just some of the additional activities included in treatment here. The wellness portion of the day is usually taken up by one of these excursions or experiential therapies.
In Summary
Blue Sky Treatment Center, in effect, offers a 30-day residential treatment program disguised as partial hospitalization. The differences are that clients live off-site and have their weekends to themselves, so there is a little more flexibility than what is offered at a traditional inpatient facility. Blue Sky Treatment Center has an educated staff, dual diagnosis support, evidence-based treatment practices and the 12 steps, all just down the street from the Florida coastline.
