Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness Review

Located two hours north of Atlanta, Georgia in the town of Clayton, Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness specializes in the care of adolescents struggling with a range of issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, learning disorders, substance use disorders, self esteem and Internet addiction. Founded in 2002, Blue Ridge offers a “wilderness model” that simultaneously reconnect clients with nature and treat the root cause of conditions. The program provides individualized treatment tailored to both the client and their family. While Blue Ridge primarily offers experiential therapy, life skills training and traditional therapy, medication management is also available for clients with co-occurring conditions.

Accommodations and Food

Clients stay in spartan accommodations far removed from the distractions of the city. Residents become reacquainted with nature and learn to depend on both themselves and their peers. Dining plays an integral role in the client’s day-to-day. Blue Ridge promotes “mindful eating” as a practice. The facility serves locally sourced, fresh foods high in nutrition. For clients with dietary preferences or restrictions, other options are available.

Treatment and Staff

Upon arrival incoming clients complete a multi-faceted intake assessment that includes the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test, a medical exam and a psychological evaluation. These elements, in addition to a risk assessment, helps the team develop the most effective customized treatment plan. Integrative approach that includes experiential therapy, outdoor activities, regular exercise, mindfulness practice, medication management and academics as well as individual, group and family therapy. Blue Ridge believes the family is a major component to the client’s recovery. Families are kept in the loop throughout their child’s time through weekly calls with a therapist, a parent mentor program, support groups, written correspondence with their child, workshops and a campus visit that includes family therapy. In addition, clients can take classes in English, Psychology, Biology and physical education. While the length of stay varies depending on the specific needs of the client, the typical length is between eight and 10 weeks.

Blue Ridge employs several primary and family therapists, a clinical psychologist, field directors, health and wellness director, a physician and a consulting psychiatrist. Medication management is available for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Extras

Blue Ridge is out-of-network with insurances, but will provide a “super bill” for maximum reimbursement.
