Scottsdale ArizonaThe Basics

Bill Ryan has been a interventionist for over 30 years. He founded Ryan Recovery Services in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2001, offering intervention services, sober coaching and monitoring internationally, nationally and locally. He is a graduate of the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) as well as the Breining Institute College for the Advanced Study of Addictive Disorders and the Illinois Institute of Addiction Recovery. He is a Registered Addiction Specialist (RAS), a Board Registered Interventionist (BRI) and Certified Life Coach (CLC). He is also a member of the American Counseling Association and the Association of Intervention Specialists.

The Background

Ryan has been involved in recovery—both professionally and personally—for nearly 40 years. Since 1977 when he began his own personal healing, he has helped carry the message of recovery to countless people around the world through public speaking, seminars, workshops and written publications. Bill spent many years as an executive in the golf industry and his unique combination of personal experience with recovery and in the corporate world make him especially well suited for interventions and recovery coaching with professionals. Ryan also works with US veterans on alcohol and substance issues including conducting interventions on them.

Through his own company, Ryan’s focus is on work place and individual executive consulting, substance abuse education and interventions. He also works with clients with chronic physical issues and motivates, coaches, mentors and supports those returning to work after significant life experiences, including major injuries and rehab. He works closely with many organizations, and companies, as well as family members and individuals. He facilitates interventions worldwide, coordinates clients’ recovery treatment, and provides post treatment monitoring and coaching services. He also currently serves as the Senior Clinical Outreach Representative for the Southern California and Arizona region at Alta Mira Recovery Programs.

The Approach

Mr. Ryan uses his personal experience in recovery along with a multitude of years as an executive in the corporate world to address addiction tactfully and respectfully. He meets with the family members for an initial briefing, either over the phone or in person. Then, facilitates the intervention, either by invitation or traditional surprise approach, with a careful process that motivates an addicted person to accept help. Ryan is able to offer referrals to the most clinically appropriate treatment facilities, as well as ongoing 12-step support for clients in recovery and their family members.

When clients do not go to treatment immediately or choose to leave treatment early, Ryan coaches the family to maintain healthy boundaries. Most often, the addict will eventually accept treatment when the family imposes healthy boundaries after the intervention. Ryan’s many years of intervention work have led him to believe an “in your face” ultimatum-driven confrontation with an addict does not promote long-term recovery. His process gets successful results because he removes the element of force from the intervention process.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Bill Ryan uses his experience of over three decades to not only conduct interventions but support clients thoroughly. He vows to “walk with the addict through the doors of a treatment facility and into his new life” and coaches the client’s family and the client throughout the recovery process, from putting together the intervention to support during and post treatment.
