Established in 1984 as one of the Duluth Bethel programs, Bethel Outpatient Center provides outpatient services for men and women ages 18 and above in Duluth, Minnesota. Just two hours from St. Paul, this program is licensed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services and offers a variety of services. While many treatment centers in the area follow the 12-step model, this facility emphasizes therapy. Through both individual and group counseling, clients work closely with the staff in order to process emotions, learn new coping mechanisms and map out efficient relapse prevention plans.
Treatment and Staff
The 11-week Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) includes a mix of group and individual therapy. Clients meet at the facility for three hours a day, three days a week. The groups accommodate between 10 and 20 clients at a time and provide the space for members to practice interpersonal skills in a safe environment, while getting feedback and encouragement from their peers. Group discussion topics vary, but may include relapse prevention, anger management, self-esteem, sexual abuse education, parenting, grief, employment, processing, trauma and life skills. Evidence-based modalities such as CBT and DBT are often used. Clients are also able to receive personal attention during individual counseling sessions. These typically occur once a week, although additional sessions can be added for an extra $70 per hour. While detox services are not available at this facility, referrals to outside facilities can be made.
Once IOP has been completed, clients are able to step down to the six-month outpatient program that meets for an hour a week. The focus of this program is solely group therapy, with a heavy emphasis on relapse prevention. Clients are encouraged to help each other track progress and address any areas that they are struggling with.
The staff includes licensed substance abuse counselors and technicians.
Separate men’s and women’s groups are available. When the outpatient program is completed, free weekly aftercare services are provided. Bethel Outpatient Center also offers urine analysis testing and an underage consumption class for clients ages 18 to 21.
For those looking for outpatient services in Minnesota that are not 12-step based, Bethel Outpatient Center has a variety of options that focus on group participation and intensive therapy. This facility also offers the bonus of free aftercare following the completion of the program.
