Located in Newark, New Jersey, Bethel Counseling Services offers comprehensive substance abuse treatment for adults and adolescents. Using evidence-based therapies and the 12 steps, clients can choose from a range of outpatient services including four levels of structured programs.
Treatment and Staff
Bethel Counseling Services offers a variety of treatment options including structured outpatient, individual, family and group therapy. Following an initial biopsychosocial evaluation, individualized treatment plans are developed to meet the specific needs of each client. Though the facility does not offer detox, referrals and transportation can be provided whenever necessary.
The 12-step based outpatient program at Bethel Counseling is broken into four levels with varying intensities: Level I meets once a week for two and half hours, Level II meets twice a week for two and a half hours, Level III meets three times a week for two and a half hours and Level IV meets four times a week for two and a half hours. The length of time spent in each level depends on each individual’s personal progress through treatment.
Using evidence-based therapies such as CBT and DBT, each level includes weekly individual therapy and group sessions to meet each treatment level’s criteria. Group topics often include relapse prevention, coping skills, early recovery skills and anger management. Clients review the 12 steps in group therapy and also have educational sessions about addiction and recovery. While they are highly encouraged to attend community AA/NA meetings and find a sponsor, this is not required. Referrals to local 12-step meetings are provided upon request.
In addition to offering structured outpatient care, clients can participate in individual, family and group therapy as an a-la-carte track. Groups are held once a week for an hour each, covering topics like anger management, marijuana recovery, positive youth development and domestic violence. Individual sessions also run for an hour, giving clients time to explore more personal issues. Support for mental health issues like depression and anxiety are addressed here as well as processing emotions, relapse prevention, communication and life skills.
The BCS staff consists of LADCs, with group sizes ranging from 10 to 15 clients at a time.
Extras
Aside from the primary treatment programs, certified HIV counseling and testing, assistance for veterans, treatment for gambling and employability workshops are all available as well.
In Summary
Though Bethel Counseling Services offers fairly basic outpatient treatment options, the facility does use evidence-based therapy and the 12 steps to tackle the basic needs of those in recovery. Through individualized treatment, each client can receive personalized care. While those with a history of relapse or who are in need of more comprehensive programs may require a facility with residential treatment or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Bethel Counseling Services is ideal for those seeking flexibility and intimate treatment groups.
