Bethany Hall, Inc. offers a variety of residential programs for women suffering from substance abuse. Located in Roanoke, Virginia, this private non-profit facility has helped approximately 1,800 women since 1970. Through the use of gender-specific treatment and evidence-based practices, clients can safely recover in a structured and nurturing environment.
Accommodations and Food
Bethany Hall is a rambling brick mansion which houses residents in comfortable bedrooms during their stay. The house holds between 20 and 30 women at a time. Color-coded bedrooms come with twin beds and room for two clients each, and the comforters and carpeting coordinate with the color of the walls. The living space also includes a large kitchen, dining room, living room with a television and a play area for kids. For exercise, the women are able to go for walks and take their children to play in the backyard of the home.
Every Saturday, clients are taken to the grocery store to buy items for the upcoming week. This allows residents to prepare meals of their choice, and to build a sense of community and self-sufficiency.
Treatment and Staff
The 30-day program requires its participants to meet certain criteria: no prior treatment, no pending legal charges, no pending involvement in social services and no medical or dental issues. The overall goal is for clients to focus solely on treatment for a continuous 30 days. During this time, they receive individual therapy once a week in addition to daily group therapy. These sessions include topics like relapse prevention, self-esteem, parenting, communication, coping skills, trauma, grief and processing. In addition to Bethany Hill’s evidence-based approach to recovery, clients also participate in 12-step meetings. Several times a week, the women are taken off-site to AA and NA meetings in the community.
The long-term residential track lasts approximately nine months, including six months of inpatient followed by three months of transitional living and a choice of aftercare programs. Using a therapeutic community model, the women are meant to bond with one another without any distractions from the opposite sex. The structure of this program is identical to the short-term track, with individual therapy once a week, group therapy and 12-step meetings.
There are also two specialty programs for mothers and soon-to-be mothers. The prenatal option allows pregnant women to enter treatment, give birth and continue receiving care with their newborn beside them, all while residing in the facility’s apartments. The typical length of stay is nine to 12 months. The other program for women with children allows mothers to keep their children with them; daycare services are provided when the women are attending daily therapy. Aftercare consists of 90 minutes a week of group therapy, relapse prevention discussions, ongoing skills building, peer support and case management.
For those seeking something other than inpatient care, Bethany Hall also offers a 12-week intensive day treatment program. This option meets several times a week for three hours, addressing addiction though behavior modification, recovery tools, anger management, self-esteem, relapse prevention and family education.
Bethany Hall is concerned with the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of its clients. With this in mind, a variety of holistic treatment approaches are available. These include a weekly Tai Chi class, acupuncture treatments and Reiki. Additionally, partner agencies and volunteers provide on-site classes on parenting, healthy sexuality, and GED completion.
Bethany Hall, Inc. offers a safe, community-based environment for women and their children to recover from a lifestyle of substance abuse. Through evidence-based modalities and the 12 steps, women can learn how to live a healthy life—and thanks to state funding, those in financial hardship won’t be turned away.
