BestCare Review

BestCare is a nonprofit substance abuse treatment organization with a network of facilities in the state of Oregon. With offices in Klamath Falls, Madras and Redmond, treatment is CARF accredited and provides a multitude of mental health and substance abuse treatment programs. Clients have access to detox, residential and outpatient treatment and BestCare also has specialized programs for individuals with co-occurring disorders, women with pain management issues, individuals in the criminal justice system and the Latino population. The residential treatment programs are gender-specific with separate housing offered for men and women, with the Madras locations specifically serving the male Latino population.

Accommodations and Food

BestCare offers five residential treatment facilities—the Klamath Falls and Redmond locations each have two gender-specific homes, while the Madras location is specifically for Latino males in need of residential care. Treatment and housing occurs independently in each home except for family groups on weekends, which unite each city’s homes with co-ed group sessions allowing families to support each other in a peer setting. Each house accommodates 10 residents who share five double-occupancy bedrooms and three bathrooms.

Clients are expected to bring their own clothing, towels and toiletries. BC provides linens that must be cared for by the residents during their stay. Clients have various freedoms including private cell phones and laptops, but they must be used on a restricted basis. Each home has a living room with cable TV for clients to enjoy during their free time in the evenings, WiFi and a landline for local calls.

All food is provided for by the facility, but clients must participate in preparation and cook family meals together. The kitchens are fully equipped and stocked. Food in general is healthy but some nights may have comfort food options like spaghetti and BBQ. Sugar and caffeine are allowed but may be monitored if a client is consuming excessively. Exercise and yoga are offered on-site, including fitness videos and guest yoga instructors.

Treatment and Staff

BestCare interviews all clients to ensure they are a good fit for the residential track. All clients must first submit to a bio-psycho-social assessment under the ASAM guidelines. An intake coordinator meets with the potential client and decides along with the clinical staff the exact methods of treatment needed. Individualized treatment plans are developed concurrently with recovery goals and discharge plans. All therapy at BC is conducted with evidence-based practices using the Motivational Interviewing (MI) model.

The average length of stay at a BC facility is three to six months, with time depending upon a client’s progress and their individual treatment needs. If a client requires detox prior to admission, BC offers their own facility with Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and licensed addiction medicine specialists. Suboxone is available and managed with the care of a doctor and nursing staff.

The average schedule at a BC residential treatment facility includes a rigorous schedule of therapy, meditation, exercise activities and 12-step meeting participation. Residents must be awake and ready to attend a daily morning meditation from 7:30 to 8 am. Breakfast is served afterwards by the facility, but clients may cook their own meal if they prefer. Chores must be performed after breakfast to ensure the homes are being maintained by the residents. Before lunch, clients attend a variety of different activities that range from exercise to therapy, including a goal-setting/week-in-review group every Monday to become focused on their recovery goals for the week. A CBT group, Mindfulness group, Art Therapy group or Pain Management group is facilitated before lunch depending on the day.

Between lunch and dinner, clients attend more group therapy including a DBT-focused group, a Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) group, Co-Occurring Disorders group, Relapse Prevention group and exercise or outdoor activities.

After dinner clients either attend in-house 12-step meetings or travel to AA/NA or MA meetings in town. Clients are encouraged to seek sponsorship through an individual they trust in the 12-step community. Female clients also attend women’s stag meetings so that they may feel more comfortable sharing and seeking support. On the weekends, clients attend family group or go on approved outings with their loved ones.

All therapy is conducted and managed by CADCs, Recovery Mentors, Psychiatrists and a nursing staff. Staff members are on-call all hours of the day and help clients with their day to day concerns. Clients are encouraged to bring their cell phones, prescriptions, approved reading material, iPods and personal effects that remind them of home.

Extras

Once per week clients attend a restorative yoga class. Residents are also encouraged to exercise at a local gym or in the great outdoors. Clinical staff organize outings that include hiking and nature-oriented activities to improve the mood of the clients.

On the weekend, BC facilitates a family group that brings together all the families of the clients. Counselors focus on psychoeducation and relapse prevention skills so that clients may have a safe environment when return home.

In Summary

BestCare offers gender-specific residential treatment for adult men and women who are in need of intensive treatment. If a client requires additional support following discharge, they may step down to the outpatient track. Clients engage daily in therapeutic and recreational activities with other residents developing fellowship, a deeper understanding of addiction and compassion for others. BestCare is group therapy-oriented, but individual therapy is available.

Receiving specialized care for Spanish-speaking clients, dual diagnosis and women-sensitive issues, BestCare facilitates an appropriate environment for cultural and gender acceptance. For substance abuse treatment, clients can live in a safe and sober space while receiving comprehensive and evidence based care.
