Des Moines IowaBernie Lorenz Recovery Review

With multiple facilities throughout central and eastern Iowa, Prelude Behavioral Services provides mental health care for individuals and their families. Opened in 1969, Prelude began offering substance abuse and gambling addiction treatment to the surrounding communities in Iowa. Now accredited by CARF, Prelude has expanded to include outpatient, transitional housing and residential treatment. The Prelude umbrella of services includes the Bernie Lorenz Recovery program, a sober living home for women who have completed primary care treatment.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Bernie Lorenz accommodate women in an attractive three-story farmhouse situated in a quiet residential neighborhood in the Des Moines area. With a maximum occupancy of 17 women at a time, the house typically has 12 residents enrolled at once. Typically residents stay with one or two other roommates in the six bedroom home, sleeping in twin beds with all linens are provided. A closet and two dressers are available in each bedroom for clients to store personal belongings. Clients are encouraged to only bring enough clothes for seven days since space is limited. Three bathrooms are available for clients to share.

The main floor has a living room which also acts as the space for house meetings and free time for clients. A TV with cable, movies and a DVD player for residents is available for use, as is plenty of comfortable seating for group time. The kitchen is fully equipped and clients are responsible for cooking their own meals. All clients must be present for family supper each night prepared by the residents. The house has large backyard area where clients socialize when weather permits.

Rules and Regulations

All women enrolled at the Bernie Lorenz sober living have the opportunity to grow in their recovery and become productive members of society. Occupancy is reserved for women who have already completed a primary treatment track and all potential residents must have a substantial amount of clean and sober time. Development of general living skills is the primary goal for treatment and the program includes education on parenting skills, homemaking and self care. Within two weeks, all clients must have a full-time job or a part-time position if they plan on attending school. Clients who have not completed their GED are assisted with the process to facilitate finding the best job possible.

All clients during their stay must actively participate in therapeutic activities that include group and individual therapy. Every week clients meet with their counselors on an individual basis to continue the work started during primary treatment. Bernie Lorenz staff understand that in order to heal from substantial trauma, self-esteem issues and additional mental health concerns, mental health care must be maintained. All clients typically see their counselor once or twice each week. Every evening following supper, clients attend an on-site group session with topics including relapse prevention, women’s specific issues and developing healthy relationships with the family unit.

Clients must attend daily 12-step meetings after the evening group session or in the afternoon hours. Obtaining sponsorship is a requirement and all clients must begin the process of working the twelve steps. Active participation in meetings as well as volunteering for commitments at the meetings is essential to the client’s growth in the community. While clients have a curfew of 9 pm, this may be adjusted to accommodate work commitments or special recovery-related meetings that the clients prefer to attend.

Clients must be self-sufficient and respectful to the house and the rules in place. All clients are responsible for weekly assigned chores, must make their own meals and maintain their employment or school responsibilities. Therapy is facilitated by CADCs and LPCs. The residence is monitored and regulated by management staff to ensure the safety and cooperation of the clients at all times.

Extras

In addition to addressing mental health issues, clients also must attend dental and physical exams so that they may begin the process of healing the body. Medical and dental care is provided for during the client’s stay.

Clients frequently participate in activities outside of the house hosted by recovery communities in the surrounding areas. Also, organized trips to movies, restaurants and the mall are facilitated on the weekends.

In Summary

The Bernie Lorenz sober living home provides women with the opportunity to further strengthen their recovery in preparation for transitioning home. All clients work to develop their social skills, parenting skills and employability. Getting a job and reuniting with the family unit and children is a primary goal for clients enrolled in this program. Attendance of group and individual therapy in tandem with 12-step meetings and employment facilitates a strong connection to each woman’s recovery. One day at a time and with the support of the other women in the house, clients at Bernie Lorenz may begin with a new lease on life.
