The Basics
Created by Dr. John Steinberg, a physician, and Dr. Paul Giannandrea, a psychiatrist, each with over 25 years of experience, The Bergand Group offers support for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Located in the Baltimore suburb of Lutherville, Maryland, this program takes effective clinical approaches and blends them with the structure of the 12 steps to facilitate healing on a deep level. With a variety of outpatient services to choose from, clients can receive an intense level of care without disrupting their everyday lives.
Treatment
This facility offers a couple of outpatient programs, with services including individual counseling, medication management, DUI education, outpatient detox and specialized group therapy. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers the highest level of support, meeting from 6 pm to 9 pm three times a week for 10 weeks. During this time, clients participate in group therapy sessions, with half-hour individual sessions once a week. Group topics focus on coping skills and communication. The cost of this program is $5,000.
Once IOP has been completed, clients are encouraged to continue on in the outpatient program, which meets once a week for three hours of group therapy. Individual counseling is not included in this program, although it can added for a fee of $100 per half hour session.
What sets The Bergand Group apart from other outpatient programs are the specialized group therapy sessions available during both IOP and outpatient. These sessions approach topics such as anger management and relapse prevention, using an approach developed by the founders that combines five different therapy models—psychoeducational, skills development, support group, CBT group and psychotherapy. These sessions occur over a 26-week period, costing $75 per group.
Medication management and outpatient detox are also available. Detox clients are required to undergo an initial assessment with the doctor, which costs $325. The follow up appointments are $125 and medication is not included. Typically, clients who are withdrawing from opiates and alcohol are given Suboxone.
Extras
Family members can be involved with the recovery process during family therapy. These sessions are scheduled as needed in conjunction with any of the other programs. This facility also offers state-certified DUI educational programs for individuals who have been issued a DUI in the state of Maryland.
