Bemidji Area Program for RecoveryBemidji Area Program for Recovery Review

Bemidji Area Program for Recovery is located way up north in the small city of Bemidji, Minnesota, about two hours east of Fargo, North Dakota, and four hours north of Minneapolis. They offer outpatient alcohol and substance abuse treatment programs, with an emphasis on serving the local Native American population.

Treatment and Staff

Bemidji Area Program for Recovery relies heavily on the 12 steps as a vehicle for encouraging personal growth and learning effective coping skills. Intensive Outpatient (IOP) as well as extended outpatient care are available. The center offers specialized IOP groups that cater specifically to men, women, adolescents and those with co-occurring disorders. Referrals to affiliated facilities are given to those who require detox or residential treatment.

In Minnesota, financial assistance for substance abuse treatment is available as long as there is a face-to-face interview by a licensed clinician and the severity of a person’s addiction is rated by the Minnesota Matrix scale. This is the starting point for anybody seeking help at the Bemidji Area Program. After a careful evaluation of each client’s unique situation, they design a treatment program that best suits their needs.

The IOP program consists of six hours of group therapy and two hours of individual therapy per week, for twelve weeks. The extended program is the same protocol, just twice as long. Clients are given the option to participate in the general adult or adolescent groups or one of the specialized groups. Bemidji Area Program defines the goal of group therapy as helping participants to build a group of supportive peers that they can take with them into life outside treatment. They are also required to attend two AA/NA meetings per week, provide proof of attendance and find a sponsor in the first 90 days. By the time those in the extended IOP program get ready to graduate, they are expected to have worked steps one through four.

The staff of Bemidji Area Program consists of certified addiction counselors and licensed clinicians, as well as several social workers and a psychiatrist.

Extras

Bemidji Area Program for Recovery offers group therapy to treat gambling addiction and domestic violence and provide coping tools for anger management. There are DUI as well as diversion classes available, too.

In Summary

Bemidji Area Program for Recovery is an affordable intensive outpatient program for men, women and adolescents seeking 12 step-based recovery. In particular, the six-month extended IOP program is about as hard core as it gets without inpatient treatment. These programs are designed to build a foundation for lasting recovery and support.
