Bellwood Health Services Review
Bellwood Health Services is part of the Edgewood network of treatment facilities located in Toronto, Canada. Founded in 1984 by Dr. Gordon Bell, who became interested in addiction treatment after the second World War while attending to soldiers who were experiencing PTSD, this facility offers residential substance abuse and co-occurring disorder treatment for adults. Bellwood offers structured, evidence-based care in a safe environment with comprehensive care.
Accommodations and Food
The large clinical complex where clients stay during their treatment is on a five-acre campus conveniently located in the heart of Toronto. Bellwood provides its clients with comfortable, spacious suites that are double occupancy with dressers and nightstands for each individual, a desk and private full bathroom. Every suite has big windows that overlook the complex’s manicured grounds and garden with stone fountain in the courtyard. There are lounges throughout the building with comfortable couches and armchairs, and big screen TVs the clients can use in between programming.
The food at Bellwood is just as important as the therapy, and the on-site chef works with the staff psychiatrist to design healthful and delicious menu choices for every meal. There are always fresh vegetables and fruit offered at the salad bar, and daily soups and freshly baked bread that is prepared at the facility.
Treatment and Staff
The evidence-based treatment at Bellwood begins with a thorough assessment of the clients individualized needs. The program typically lasts about six weeks, during which time clients participate in a number of group and individual therapy sessions, psychoeducation, nutrition and exercise and relapse prevention. The programs are designed as a step down phased treatment that can result in a continuing care or outpatient treatment.
The treatment includes CBT, an introduction to the 12 steps and life skills training. Depending on the level of care needed, medical staff is available 24 hours a day and can offer medication management or Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) services. There is a holistic aspect to treatment as well, with daily guided meditation and relaxation techniques offered in conjunction with clinical treatments. The large and multi disciplinary treatment team consists of medical and clinical staff with vast experience in addiction treatment, including Master’s-level LCSWs, LPCs, psychiatrists, physicians and LPNs.
There is an on-site gym with cardio machines and weights and weekly instructor-led fitness classes like yoga or circuit training. Clients also participate in outdoor recreational activities like volleyball or softball. A rec room with ping-pong table and air hockey helps clients fill the moments between meetings or during family visitation, and additional options like massage therapy or acupuncture are also available. There are also weekly trips out of the facility that are lead by a staff member where clients head into Toronto and take in a movie or a museum.
Family and couples counseling services are available on an individualized basis. A four-day family intensive and education day is provided for all family members. There is a yearlong aftercare program consisting of monthly meetings that is offered to all clients and their families.
Bellwood Health Services brings over 70 years of experience in the field of addiction treatment. The combination of evidence-based and holistic treatment methods has proven effective, with a success rate of 83% of clients remaining sober after six months of completing their programs. This is an excellent choice for those seeking an affordable treatment option in Toronto.
