Bellin Health Psychiatric Center Review

Bellin Health Psychiatric Center is located in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on the banks of Lake Michigan. The rehab offers detox, outpatient care and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults and teens with substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders. As the only private psychiatric hospital in the area, Bellin Health has been helping clients for over 30 years. They also offer treatment at a network of outpatient clinics in the surrounding areas.

Accommodations and Food

Bellin Health’s detox unit houses clients in the hospital in shared rooms. There is a strict no smoking policy and  nicotine patches are available for those with a doctor’s prescription. Meals are offered in the cafeteria for clients who feel well enough to leave the unit. If they are not, a tray can be delivered to their room. Telephone use and TV watching are scheduled throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Bellin Health begins after an assessment that the team uses to design an individualized treatment plan. The goal is to help the client to reach their highest level of functioning and recovery. Those who require medically supervised detox are admitted to the hospital’s short-term detox program, which focuses on alleviation of acute symptoms. Detox is available for adults and adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 and the average length of stay is four days, after which clients are referred to one of the outpatient programs or another facility for inpatient treatment. Clients are separated by age and gender in the unit.

In designing the individualized treatment plan, the staff focuses on how five areas of life have been affected by substance abuse—spiritual, physical, economic, psychological and social. They believe that identifying issues that require attention during recovery, and focusing on improved coping skills and setting goals, helps clients to re-establish control of their lives.

Both the adult and adolescent IOP programs include two-hour group sessions three times a week for six weeks. Adults have a choice between day and evening sessions, while the teen group is only offered in the afternoons. Individual therapy is typically one hour a week (more in dual diagnosis cases) and is scheduled to fit the client’s needs. The outpatient programs follow the same schedule, but require one individual session and only one group session and  per week. In addition to the main hospital campus, outpatient programs are offered at Bellin Clinic locations in Marinette, Bellevue and Oconto, Wisconsin.

Bellin Health does not use a 12-step approach, but focuses on evidence-based practices such as CBT and DBT. Activities during group sessions include education about communication and self-esteem, codependency, stress management, relaxation, assertiveness and conflict resolution. Other components of treatment include art therapy and the “wrap-up,” which is a daily closure meeting. The teen group does role-playing exercises to help with healthy decision making, socializing and reducing tension and anxiety.

The team at Bellin Health includes psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, therapists, nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists and nutritionists. All services are certified by the state of Wisconsin, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization.

Extras

Other Bellin Health services include medication management, electroshock therapy and pain management.

Outpatient mental health programs are offered for children. These address coping and self-esteem skills as well as behavioral problems.

In Summary

Bellin Health offers medically supervised detox and outpatient therapy for adults and adolescents who need drug and alcohol treatment. Pricing is based on treatment regimen and may differ from client to client. For those who need inpatient treatment or want a 12-step approach, this is not the place. However, for adults and teens who need outpatient treatment while dealing with co-occurring disorders, this facility offers specialized help and several clinic locations.
