Bell Hill Recovery Center Review
Since 1973, Bell Hill Recovery Center has been treating chemical dependency in central Minnesota. This non-profit residential treatment program and sober living hybrid sits on a rural 47 acres of land in the town of Wadena, about 90 miles north of St. Cloud. Treatment at Bell Hill is designed with the chronic relapser in mind and clients are offered extended social support and skill building opportunities in affordable seclusion.
Accommodations and Food
Though the sober living facility can accommodate a limited number of women, the inpatient division of the Bell Hill Recovery Center serves men only. The residences look like single story dormitories. Twenty adult males, aged 18 and up, share rooms and communal bathrooms. Residents enjoy the use of a rec center/game room, gym, TV room, woodworking shop, craft room, softball field, tennis court, walking paths and a garden. Laundry machines and detergent are available for use by all residents. Linen and towels are also provided.
Meals are served in a communal dining hall and residents have access to vending machines in the rec room. The food is reminiscent of public school cafeterias—don’t expect special dietary considerations.
Treatment and Staff
The average time period for the inpatient treatment program is anywhere from 45-90 days. The first 30 days there are no cars allowed here and no one leaves. After this initial time period, clients have the option of going into town with staff members for weekly shopping trips.
Treatment at Bell Hill revolves around the 12-step model so the length of stay can depend on how a client is progressing through the steps. Although this model is their fundamental approach, they also work to rebuild clients’ self-esteem through the development of hobbies, continued education and new skill acquirement. Clients here can expect a combination of group therapy, individual counseling (spiritual and psychological), NA/AA meetings, group exercise classes, crafting, recreational activities, addiction education and, if necessary, GED tutoring.
Though detox services are not provided at this facility, there are approximately 50 staff members serving both the inpatient program and the extended sober living quarters. This includes addiction counselors, nurses, chemical dependency technicians, support staff and patient care coordinators. There is a full-time nursing team on-site who handle any medical needs and also distribute medication around the clock.
Extras
Bill Hill Recovery Center provides its clients with a rec center (ping pong, foosball, pool table), on-site gym, TV room, “Hobby Shop,” craft room, softball field and tennis court. The hobby shop allows them to learn and practice woodworking and carpentry. The craft room includes a loom for weaving and sewing machine. Gardening and vegetable cultivation are also extras offered here.

Bell Hill Recovery Center could be the place for someone who has struggled to stay sober. The focus on a sober community in a controlled but educational environment could be exactly what it takes to make this time stick. Funding can be established through the state of Minnesota and/or the individual; in short, this is relatively affordable and accessible treatment catering to the chronic relapser.
