The Anthony Louis Center was established in 1982 by On-Belay of Minnesota to provide treatment for substance abusing adolescents. Founded by a group of concerned medical professionals and citizens, the program was formed to serve the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The Anthony Lewis Center provides walk-in drug screening, substance abuse assessments, outpatient, residential and extended care programs for children aged between 13 and 18. On-Belay House is the inpatient facility for adolescent males and females.
Accommodations and Food
Clients are housed in a 16-bed female or 20-bed male facility, two or four to a room. The rooms are furnished with bunk beds, with additional areas to study, eat meals and relax. A Chef cooks home-style meals with the assistance of the clients, as meal preparation is part of a revolving list of chores each resident must complete.
Treatment and Staff
Before admission into any program, clients participate in an assessment to determine their level of need and receive a proposed treatment plan. Specific recommendations are made based on chemical use, family structure, behavioral problems, legal problems an education problems. Each client benefits from highly structured and individualized treatment plans that consist of individual CBT, group therapy, family counseling, lectures, education programming, psychological consultation and life skills training. Residents are transported to and from school each day, and are supervised during all waking hours. Evenings are spent completing homework and treatment work, which includes chores, attendance at in-house and off-site 12-step meetings.
Medical detox is not available, but clients with co-occurring disorders are offered nursing services, medication management and dual diagnosis counseling. Clients also benefit from dietary coaching and nursing services. Treatment length is flexible, and lasts from anywhere between 30 to 45 days for primary treatment, and three to six months for extended care.
Outpatient treatment, for clients not requiring the intensity of the inpatient program, provides the same components in full-day treatment, Monday to Friday. Individual counseling, group therapy, life skills development, family counseling, lectures and educational programming is covered in treatment sessions.
Staff consists of licensed clinical psychologists, LCDCs, registered nurses, a dietician, teachers and Master’s-level clinicians. There are at least three staff members supervising inpatient clients during waking hours, with at least one staff member supervising overnight.
On-Belay House provides an excellent inpatient program for adolescents struggling with substance abuse and related problems. The services offered by the Anthony Lewis Center are comprehensive, and may succeed in preventing substance abuse from escalating into full addiction. For clients that need a strong base from which to start recovery, On-Belay House provides highly structured and closely supervised programs. Ensuring 24/7 monitoring means that parents and guardians can rest assured that their children will remain taken care of, while providing clients the structure from which they can build their new lives. The extended length of stay in the residential program also means that clients do not have to leave before they feel confident in their ability to maintain sobriety.
