Located an hour west of Philadelphia in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Behavioral Wellness and Recovery (BWR) is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. This Joint Commission-Accredited facility provides individualized treatment programs that utilize evidence-based therapies, holistic methods, recreation and family therapy. BWR offers a continuum of care that includes a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), outpatient and aftercare. While clients can choose to stay at home or in other accommodations, Behavioral Wellness and Recovery clients typically stay in the recommended recovery residence, called Wentworth.
Treatment and Staff
During intake, clients participate in a thorough assessment that reviews their substance use history, a physical evaluation and a psychiatric assessment. This helps the staff to determine the most effective treatment plan. If deemed necessary, clients go into a detox program. While Behavioral Wellness and Recovery does not offer detox on-site, it can transport individuals to local detox facilities and bring them back after completion.
The BWR staff typically recommends that clients go through three phases of care, with the average stay being six weeks. Individualized treatment plans allow clients to focus on their specific needs. To this end, clients are assigned a primary therapist and have input in their customized programming. While the sober living accommodations affiliated with BWR are gender-specific, the treatment is co-ed.
Clients in PHP attend a minimum of 25 hours of therapy at the office, with around-the-clock supervision at Wentworth. A typical day includes group therapy, 12-step meetings and groups covering topics like stress management, self-value, changing thinking and spirituality. In addition, clients engage in bi-weekly individual therapy. Counselors utilize evidence-based therapies including CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Holistic methods are offered like nutrition education, mindfulness and meditation.
IOP offers a slightly less structured program with weekly therapy hours ranging between nine and 24 hours. Many of the same methods from PHP treatment are utilized in addition to family therapy, aftercare planning and relapse prevention. Following completion of IOP, clients have the option to step down into the outpatient program. This plan offers between one and eight hours of therapy a week.
The Behavioral Wellness and Recovery team is comprised of CADCs, case managers, Master’s-level therapists, physicians and a nursing team. For clients in need of dual diagnosis support, a consulting psychiatrist is available to provide medication management.
Located in the historic district of West Chester, the sober living accommodations provide a well-structured environment with a tranquil atmosphere perfect for early recovery. Wentworth staff provides daily transportation to the BWR facility as well as to meetings and events that take place after treatment hours. Wentworth offers spacious floor plans, modern decor and plenty of common areas for relaxation. Male and female clients stay in gender-specific buildings with approximately 25 clients in each at a time. Clients typically have one roommate, and rooms are equipped with full-sized beds and nice furnishings.
Clients eat breakfast at Wentworth and lunch at the clinical facility. There is a designated dining room for lunch and meals are prepared by a certified food manager. Behavioral Wellness and Recovery encourages peer socializing during and after meals.
Clients have access to a local gym several times a week. On weekends, a variety of recreational outings are offered. These include movies, sporting events and shopping trips.
BWR believes that family involvement is a significant aspect to the success of long-term sobriety. The facility provides individualized treatment for the client’s family that includes weekly psychoeducational classes, multi-family discussion groups and weekly family therapy sessions.
Behavioral Wellness and Recovery is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of those with co-occurring disorders. While the facility does not technically offer a residential program, the combination of PHP and recovery housing amounts to a structured recovery experience. The treatment is individualized with a vast array of therapeutic options. In addition, residents live in off-site upscale housing with peers. Behavioral Wellness and Recovery is a great option for a strong program with some built-in flexibility.
