Behavioral Services Center Review
Founded in 2006, Behavioral Services Center offers an array of outpatient substance abuse treatment services in four different locations. Their facilities are spread throughout Illinois in downtown Chicago, Skokie, Elmhurst and Mundelein. Treatment at each facility is offered to adolescents and adults through individualized treatment programs catered to each client’s needs. BSC offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse, as well as anger management and domestic violence groups, parenting classes, life coaching, acupuncture and medication management.
Treatment and Staff
Upon beginning treatment at BSC, all clients undergo an intake assessment. Clients with co-occurring disorders are offered medication management from a visiting psychiatrist.
The adult substance abuse IOP typically meets three times a week for three hours per session. The downtown Chicago and Elmhurst groups meet on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the evening from 6 to 9 pm. The Mundelein groups are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the same time. The Skokie office offers morning and evening groups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The Monday group takes place from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm and from 6 to 9 pm. While the Wednesday and Thursday groups are available at 10 am and 6 pm. Finally, there’s a Saturday group from 10 am to 1 pm. Typically groups are led in an educational and discussion based format with a focus on addiction. Group topics include the disease of addiction, alcohol and drug education, relapse prevention, coping skills and stress management.
The adolescent services consist of an IOP track or a less intensive personalized schedule of outpatient services. All adolescent groups are held at each facility for three hours at a time. Groups are held Mondays through Thursdays from 6 to 9 pm and Saturday from 9 am to noon to address topics like mood, anxiety, eating disorders and substance abuse. Individual sessions are available for an hour once a week. Clients in all programs are offered individual therapy sessions that are scheduled as needed.
Staff includes LADCs and LPCs that use evidence-based modalities like CBT and DBT.
Extras
Clients in IOP are offered aftercare services, which include one group session a week for at least a year at no extra cost.
BSC also offers acupuncture and services for sex and porn addiction. Treatment for sex and porn addiction can also be included part of IOP when applicable. These issues can be addressed during individual sessions, though BSC also provides weekly support groups for these issues. Regardless, treatment for sex and porn addiction takes on an educational and therapeutic approach aimed to help clients identify the triggers that lead to sexual obsessions.
Lastly, parenting skills coaching services are available once a week at the Skokie office only. This program offers classes every Wednesday from 7 to 8 pm for 11 weeks, during which clients learn the difference between discipline and development. Other topics include understanding family roles, dealing with sibling conflict and coping skills for parents.
In Summary
Behavioral Services Center offers affordable programs to adults and adolescent living in Illinois. Though their adolescent options are not nearly as extensive as their adult services, they are still well rounded. BSC is a great option for those seeking flexible and affordable outpatient services that use an evidence-based approach to therapy.
