Located in the small hamlet of Mooresville, North Carolina, Behavioral Health Services of Lake Norman offers outpatient substance abuse services as well as mental health treatment and a host of other behavioral health programs. Their facility is located just a few miles from their namesake, Lake Norman, the largest man-made body of freshwater in the state.
Treatment and Staff
Behavioral Health Services of Lake Norman’s primary substance abuse program consists of three two-hour group therapy sessions a week typically on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Clients also have access to individual therapy sessions several times a month for 45 minutes. Each of these sessions are led by the same certified addiction specialist who is also an LPC with a Master’s degree in education. Groups range in size from five to six clients to occasionally as many as 24 per session.
The length of each client’s program also varies depending on their initial assessment and legal status, as many clients at Lake Norman attend as a result of a court-mandate. The outpatient services are tailored to meet all DUI program requirements. The methodology and focus of treatment varies from group to group, but there is an emphasis on the CBT approach. The program also offers experiential therapy and EMDR methods as well.
There is no official dual-diagnosis support included in the substance abuse outpatient sessions, though Lake Norman does have a wide array of mental health services available which clients can integrate into their weekly program. Whenever possible, clients work with the same counselor who leads the substance abuse sessions (though there are four others on staff for mental health counseling) and address co-occurring disorders such as depression, bi-polar disorder, anxiety and panic disorders, ADD/ADHD, OCD and post-traumatic stress.
There is no psychiatrist on staff at Lake Norman, nor is there medication management or a medical team. Clients in need of a medical detox must be referred to an accommodating facility during their intake evaluation.

While Behavioral Health Services of Lake Norman has what it deems an aftercare program, it is essentially comprised of stepped-down involvement once certain program requirements have been met.
In addition to their substance abuse outpatient program and mental health services, the facility also offers a host of practical legal programs for those who need to fulfill specific court-mandated services. They provide DMV evaluations and Department of Transportation (DOT) Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluations, as well as an Alcohol Drug Education Traffic School (ADETS) program.

With group and individual sessions and dual diagnosis support available on-site, those attending the facility due to a court mandate can be sure that their legal and psychological needs will be met in a traditional setting that uses modern treatment methodologies.
