Bayview Hunters Point Foundation for Community ImprovementBayview Hunters Point Foundation for Community Improvement Review

Located in San Fransisco, California, Bayview Hunters Point Foundation for Community Improvement, Inc. provides outpatient treatment for those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction, with a philosophy of harm reduction rather than complete abstinence. The facility offers a Narcotic Treatment Program which treats individuals 18 and older who are addicted to heroin. Services are available to residents of San Francisco, with a focus on the southeastern sector of the city. Using evidence based methods, clients can receive therapy and methadone supported detox.

Treatment and Staff

The Foundation provides support to those looking to get off of heroin. Through assisted outpatient detox and individual and group therapy, clients can discover a new way of living. Evidence based therapies are used to veer clients towards full rehabilitation and independent living.

Both adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse have access to treatment. Each individual session runs for an hour, giving clients plenty of time to delve into personal issues. Support for mental health problems such as depression and anxiety can also be addressed. Group therapy topics focus on addiction education, relapse prevention, problem solving, coping skills and anger management. Evidence based therapies such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) are used frequently. Clients are welcome to attend 12-step meetings during their free time, though these are not required. Usually therapy is done in conjunction with the methadone treatment.

Those in need can participate in methadone maintenance as well, which is administered on an outpatient basis under the supervision of medical professionals. They can also participate in a long-term outpatient detox which lasts up to six months. Services are typically provided for up to two years, although some cases require longer periods of time. Through the combination of medication and therapy, many clients are able to stop using heroin and begin living healthier lives. The staff at Bayview Hunters consists of four CADCs.

Extras

Therapy and support for those with HIV/AIDS or who are at risk of HIV infection is offered as well. There is also HIV opt-out testing, which screens to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS to clients who are currently enrolled in treatment at the facility. Referrals to other treatments and social services are also available. The foundation fosters a wide range of support for mental health issues, as well as structured programs for youth struggling with behavioral health issues.

In Summary

In all, Bayview Hunters Point Foundation for Community Improvement, Inc. gives clients medical and therapeutic support to safely get off drugs. Through evidence based therapies, clients learn how to conduct themselves in a new way. Though the methadone-based component of the program may not be for everyone, the facility does offer a range of proven treatment methods as well to help clients make a full recovery.
