Bay State Community Services (1)Bay State Community Services (BSCS) Review

Bay State Community Services, which was founded in 1991, provides outpatient mental health and substance abuse services to adults and adolescents in and around the Quincy, Massachusetts area. It was formed through a merger with five other community-based agencies that provided human services to residents of Boston and the Southeastern part of the state. With much of its funding from the Department of Public Health, the Department of Mental Health, the Department of Children and Families and the Office of Community corrections, in addition to private donations, Bay State Community Services is in a position to offer treatment based on ability to pay.

Treatment and Staff

Along with its mental health and outpatient services, BSCS provides substance abuse evaluations, medication management and group services for adolescents and adults. Detox services are not available on-site, so detox must be completed prior to admission.

Depending on the substance abuse and/or mental health issues that are identified during the client’s initial assessment, clinicians create an individualized treatment plan. The client works with their clinician in one weekly individual session, using CBT, psychodynamics, DBT and EMDR. Rather than limiting outpatient services to a specific time frame, clients are treated for as long as needed. Group therapy takes place once a week for 60 minutes. The size of the group varies from three to 10 people.

BSCS uses educational readings to instruct clients about relapse prevention and harm reduction. The facility attempts to enter into formal agreements with adolescent clients to help them set individual goals to reduce drinking or drug use to specific levels as they work toward complete abstinence. Adolescents participate in targeted groups for self-esteem, relapse prevention and trauma.

The staff is well-credentialed, including LCSW and LMHC. Psychiatrists and psychologists are also on staff to treatment adults and teens, including a psychiatrist to address medication needs. Dual diagnosis services are available for adult but not adolescent clients.

Extras

Though there is no family program, BSCS refers to the Family Resource Center, which is located nearby and offers family therapy with in-home treatment as an option.

In Summary

Bay State Community Services is offering basic outpatient services for an affordable price. The pluses are the variable length of treatment, adolescent specific services and trauma informed care—EMDR is one of those therapies that is usually only offered for an additional fee. This could be the place for someone stepping down from residential treatment, but might not be enough for someone looking for primary care.
