Based out of Battle Creek, Michigan, just east of Kalamazoo, Battle Creek VA Medical Center is a behavioral health organization providing a range of individualized treatment services for low-income and homeless veterans. The facility is owned and operated by the US Department of Veterans Affairs and provides residential treatment for veterans struggling with co-occurring disorders.
Accommodations and Food
The facility has 40 beds available for men and women primarily in shared rooms, though some private rooms are available for women who have been through trauma. Each of the bedrooms comes with twin beds, dressers and shared closet space. The facility is relatively clinical though it also has lounges with cable TV, exercise equipment and outdoor walking paths. Throughout their stay, clients are served three meals a day cafeteria-style.
Treatment and Staff
Detox is not available but clients can get referrals to off-site facilities as necessary before beginning treatment at Battle Creek. Stays in the inpatient program here are generally 90 to 120 days.
Clients can expect both individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT. Groups cover a range of subjects including anger management, relapse prevention, money management, job seeking strategies, Seeking Safety, addiction education and other rotating topics. Dual diagnosis support is available as well, including medication management. While 12-step participation is not strictly required, all residents are strongly encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings upon treatment completion.
The staff consists of RNs, MDs, psychologists, LCSWs, LPNs, CADCs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.
Extras
The organization provides standalone mental health counseling. As they progress through treatment, clients also learn employment skills and get help from staff members to find jobs and permanent housing. A full continuum of affordable health care services is also available through Battle Creek. Those who complete primary care can continue with outpatient therapy as a stepped down form of aftercare.
