BASIC Inc. Review
BASIC Inc., is an acronym for the Black Alcohol Drug Service Information Center. It has been serving the black communities of the city of St. Louis, Missouri since it was established in 1983. BASIC Inc. offers comprehensive and culturally sensitive alcohol and drug abuse treatment services on an outpatient basis. It utilizes the 12-step philosophy as well as non-traditional modalities of care. The program has several goals. Not just cessation of substance abuse, but also to positively affect the everyday lifestyle of people of color, shed social prejudice about African Americans and their connection to drug use—which people of color often find they have internalized—and replace it with an increase in self-esteem, self-worth and cultural pride. BASIC Inc. also offers community education and prevention activities such as post Sunday church service meetings, sober recreational activities and job training.
Treatment and Staff
BASIC Inc. clients are first evaluated by a counselor so the appropriate level of care may be determined and an individualized treatment plan can be developed. Treatment includes group therapy sessions that cover a variety of topics are held held every day and last between one and three hours. AA/NA meetings are offered on-site Monday through Friday. Depending on the assigned level of care, clients may be required to attend those meetings from as few as one to as many as five times a week. Morning and evening time meetings are both available.
BASIC Inc. staff consists of both recovering and non-recovering CADCs. Family counseling and individual therapy is also available.

The celebrity actor “Mr. T” was one of BASIC’s first board members. BASIC was solicited by the city of New Orleans, Louisiana to implement our culturally specific treatment for alcoholism and drug dependency within Orleans Parish. A branch of BASIC, Inc. has been operating there since 1994.

BASIC Inc. offers specialized substance abuse treatment services exclusively for underserved black communities. Its focus on helping and lifting up the black community set it apart from other outpatient treatment centers. Its services are state funded and thus offered at no cost to the clients that need them. Those seeking a more traditional Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or residential substance abuse treatment services will be provided with a referral to another facility. However, BASIC Inc. is very helpful to individuals that have often been harshly overlooked and badly mistreated by the social system.
