San Bernardino County of Behavioral Health's Barstow Counseling Center (1)Barstow Counseling Center Review

Founded in 2004 in Barstow, California, the Barstow Counseling Center is a division of the San Bernardino County of Behavioral Health. The facility offers outpatient substance abuse treatment and mental health services to adult men and women throughout the county. There is some misleading information on Google implying the facility is closed but at the time of publication of this review, a representative from Barstow Counseling Center confirms it is most definitely up and running.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at Barstow Counseling Center begins with a phone screening with a counselor. If the client is deemed in need of more intensive treatment, the counselor refers him or her to residential treatment and detox facilities, some of which are also operated by the county.

If the counselor believes the client will benefit from the services at Barstow Counseling Center, he or she is brought in for a formal assessment. From there, the counselor builds an individualized treatment plan for the client. When developing the treatment plan counselors thoroughly evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each incoming client. The treatment strategy aims to address the client’s specific health, legal, employment, relationship, psychosocial and/or parenting (if applicable) issues.

The outpatient program at Barstow Counseling Center spans six months and consists of both group and individual therapy. The group meetings last 90 minutes and meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The meetings consist of 10 to 12 clients, both men and women. Barstow has two counselors on site who lead the group meetings. One of the counselors is a CADC and the other is a LADC. The counselors use a variety of therapeutic tactics in the group meetings including relapse prevention, anger management and coping and recovery skills. Counselors also discuss the importance of recognizing co-occurring disorders in these groups.

Although Barstow Counseling Center does not utilize CBT, the program is based on a similar ideology aimed at changing the clients’ thinking patterns. The curriculum allots for individual counseling based on the needs of the client.

The counselors recommend clients regularly attend local 12-step groups and find a sponsor while in treatment. Clients can also expect to be randomly breathalyzed and drug tested.

Barstow Counseling Center is dual diagnosis and if the counselors believe the client has a co-occurring disorder, they recommend the client to someone in the county’s mental health department, usually a doctor on staff that can prescribe the necessary medication.

When clients finish their six months in the outpatient program, they are given the option of continuing for an additional three months if the counselors think it’s necessary and the client’s own personal circumstances can allow it.

Extras

Barstow Counseling Center offers a weekly family program for family members and clients. In these meetings, counselors educate family members on addiction and relapse issues. Even though it’s considered part of the outpatient program, clients must sign a release form before their family members can participate in these meetings.

Although Barstow Counseling Center does not have an official aftercare program, counselors go above and beyond to insure the client is highly involved in local 12-step meetings and has an AA/NA sponsor before he or she discharges.

In Summary

San Bernardino County of Behavioral Health’s Barstow Counseling Center is a solid option for men and women seeking outpatient care in the Barstow area. The flexible length of the program allows clients and counselors plenty of time to meet their goals. Additionally, the individualized treatment plan properly aligns people to tackle their own unique issues head-on, in order to build a solid foundation for success both personally and professionally.
