Barry’s House Review
Barry’s House is a men’s only transitional housing facility in Beverly, Massachusetts. Programming at Barry’s House is based on the 12-step philosophy and broken down into two phases. There are group sessions and recovery activities held regularly so that clients get a taste of a sober lifestyle that is engaging and fun. Barry’s House provides a structured environment for their clients as well as individualized family support. Barry’s House operates under the umbrella of their parent company, Baystate Recovery Services.
Accommodations and Amenities
The residence is located in the downtown area of Beverly, a coastal town, which is commonly referred to as the “Garden City” because of it’s beautiful parks and open spaces. The home is close to several shops and restaurants along with public transportation and beaches. The two-story colonial home that can accommodate up to 10 clients who sleep in double occupancy bedrooms that are fully furnished with twin beds and dressers. The living room has a flat screen TV that’s mounted over the fireplace and leather couches. The facility has a meeting room that doubles as a classroom for phase one clients. Additionally there is a formal dining room and large kitchen that’s fully stocked.
While clients in the first phase don’t leave the facility for 30 days, they are still responsible for their own food. Initially staff or phase two clients go shopping for them and assist in teaching them how to prepare their own meals.
Rules and Regulations
Those in the first phase at Barry’s House are required to participate in group sessions and daily Big Book study. Steps One through Seven are covered and clients have writing assignments and meetings led by volunteers from the community. Additionally phase one clients aren’t allowed to go off-site with staff or phase two clients. There are also daily chores within the house and clients have to keep their personal spaces clean and tidy by making their beds and keeping their personal food labeled. During this initial phase clients can’t look for work or enroll in school. They are also not permitted to have their phones, computer or tablets at this stage.
Phase two is when the men put what they learned from phase one into everyday practice by seeking out a full time job or enrolling in school full time. However either of these activities can’t interfere with the mandatory meetings held at the house Monday through Friday evenings. Clients work through Steps Eight through 12 and begin to make their amends. There are also mandatory off-site AA or NA meetings that clients are required to attend. In total both of these phases lasts about six to nine months.
Sober excursions include hiking, biking, skiing, kayaking and other outdoor adventure activities. There is also a gym membership that’s offered to those who are out of the first phase of treatment.
