The Barry-Eaton District Health Department is a public health services agency that provides numerous health services, resources and programs to the Charlotte, Michigan community. Through the behavioral health branch, Barry-Eaton provides substance abuse treatment that includes both basic outpatient care and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). All treatment is evidence based and uses both traditional and holistic therapeutic methods.
Treatment and Staff
There are two levels of treatment at Barry-Eaton; one is a basic outpatient group counseling program and the other is the IOP, with all therapy using CBT techniques. The IOP meets three times a week and typically lasts for four to six weeks. Each week, clients attend an educational seminar, group and individual therapy. Topics covered in the education sessions include substance dependence, recovery skills and relapse prevention strategies.
The less intensive outpatient track known as the Outpatient Group Counseling program is comprised of a variety of group options that cater to specific populations. The Insight Group meets twice a week for a total of 12 sessions and focuses on basic abstinence strategies. The Early Recovery group meets once a week and incorporates the same methods as the Insight Group but adds relapse prevention skills and lasts 12 weeks. The Life Balance Group incorporates holistic healing methods and meets weekly for a total of 12 sessions. Clients focus on life and coping skills and relaxation techniques. Lastly, the Transitional Cognitive Group is 12-20 weeks in length and explores thinking and cognitive skill development. All treatment is open-ended, allowing clients to come and go based on their individual scheduling needs and progress in recovery.
There is also a specific five-week program for adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 called Choices. Young people who are experimenting with drug use and their parents or guardians meet once a week for two hour sessions. Parents also meet with counselors for parenting skills workshops.
General one-on-one counseling services are provided for those seeking additional care or as its own track. Clients may choose a combination of individual, couple’s and family sessions. The 12 steps are not incorporated into the treatment programs at Barry-Eaton.
Various holistic treatment methods are incorporated into treatment including meditation and auricular acupuncture—a particular form of treatment helpful for addictive behaviors.
Barry-Eaton provides an array of additional services beyond the substance abuse treatment program including a full range of health services such as immunizations, hearing and vision screening, family planning, cancer care, children’s health services, a dental clinic and STD screenings.
There are also gender-specific recovery outreach programs to incarcerated men and women known as the Re-entry Groups. This recovery group meets once a week at the Eaton County Jail and men and women participate in separate CBT group sessions.
Barry-Eaton is a comprehensive outpatient treatment program with a range of services that include basic and intensive treatment and an adolescent program. A variety of unique tracks allow clients to explore their sobriety using traditional therapy methods as well as holistic treatment. With specialty programs for young people as well as the incarcerated, thoughtfully designed programs aim to treat the mind, body and spirit going well beyond clinical care.
