Baptist Memorial Chemical Dependency UnitBaptist Memorial Hospital Chemical Dependency Unit Review

The Baptist Memorial Hospital has provided care for those in Tennessee and Mississippi since 1912. Now an award-winning network of 14 hospitals, the chemical dependency unit is located in Columbus, Mississippi and provides care for adults 18 and over. With a range of treatment options including detoxoutpatient and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)—Baptist Memorial provides a strong continuum of care for chemically dependent clients.

Accommodations and Food

The chemical dependency unit accommodates 30 men and women at a time. Clients sleep in semi-private rooms, which house three or four clients at a time. Accommodations are basic, as clients are only admitted for a short term detox stay. Meals are provided through the hospital cafeteria.

Treatment and Staff

The multi-disciplinary team provides treatment from intake to discharge. Initial assessment is free, and if necessary individuals receive medically monitored detox in a safe, comfortable environment. The detox program typically runs three to five days. All detox clients are monitored 24/7 by a team of board-certified psychiatrists and nursing staff.  Medication management and dual diagnosis support are provided as needed. The proximity to the psychiatric wing means that clients with co-occurring disorders are able to access additional resources that deal specifically with their needs. A psychiatric technician is also always on-site, to assist with any emotional problems.

After detox, clients can receive a referral to a residential program or enroll in the IOP to continue their recovery. IOP is eight weeks long, and consists of group and individual therapy, as well as mandatory attendance at 12-step meetings. This program is great for clients as they are able to stay at home or continue work while they receive treatment. A key component of therapy is learning life skills, and how to deal with everyday stressors.

CADCs, along with LCSWs, assist clients with individual treatment goals and with getting their lives back on track.

Extras

Employment assistance, as well as resources for housing, legal matters and financial difficulties are arranged. Clients also receive random drug screening, marital counseling, assistance with smoking cessation and family therapy. Follow-up care for those who relapse in the first year is free of charge.

In Summary

Baptist Memorial Hospital Chemical Dependency Unit provides essential detox and follow-up care for clients struggling with substance abuse and addiction. The proximity to the psychiatric unit, and other healthcare services means that clients of all kinds, including those with dual diagnoses are sure to receive the care they require.
