Banyan Treatment Center Review
With locations in Pompano Beach and Stewart, Florida, as well as in Chicago and Boston, Banyan Treatment Center provides a variety of addition treatment options. These include detox, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and gender-specific sober living for those in treatment. The Illinois center also provides housing for men only at this time.
The belief at Banyan Treatment Center is that not one-size-fits all and this is evident by their recovery protocols. Not only do they offer a traditional 12-step treatment track, but there is a Christian track for those seeking a faith-based approach. Clients seeking an alternative to the 12 steps are offered a SMART Recovery curriculum and for Buddhists, there is a mindfulness curriculum based on Refuge Recovery.
Accommodations and Food
Banyan Treatment Center at Pompano is the company headquarters and largest clinical facility. All of the residences are in close proximity to the treatment facility. Clients are generally accommodated in gender-specific, two bedroom apartments. There are no more than four residents per apartment. PHP and IOP clients reside in different housing complexes because PHP clients require a higher level of care and supervision.
Residents are responsible for their own groceries, and participate in food shopping and meal preparation. Amenities include laundry facilities, house computers with Wi-Fi, and flat screen TVs that offer cable. Staff lives on the premises and provides around-the-clock monitoring. Smoking is permitted outside. During treatment, clients are also provided with cigarette breaks.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admittance to Banyan, clients receive comprehensive assessments with a licensed clinician. Detox is available on-site and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) using Suboxone is offered to ease withdrawal symptoms. Detox typically lasts between two and five days. At Banyan Treatment Center, new clients undergo a five-day orientation track, which introduces them to the different recovery curriculum that are available.
The 12-step tracks, focuses on AA/NA principles, and clients work their steps, plus attend both on-site and local 12-step meetings. The Christian Recovery track is non-denominational track and welcomes clients of all faiths. This protocol includes attendance at Celebrate Recovery meetings and going to church. The Christian track also incorporates a 12-step protocol, and clients attend AA/NA meetings. The Buddhist track, which is based on Refuge Recovery, teaches clients the Four Noble Truths, and includes mindfulness and meditation practice, and attendance at Refuge Recovery meetings. The SMART Recovery track uses SMART’s four-point program. Besides attending off-site SMART Recovery meetings, clients learn recovery tools that help them maintain abstinence and that teach them healthy behavior patterns.
Both PHP and IOP treatment length is between 45 and 60 days. PHP is from 9:30 am to four pm, Mondays through Fridays and consists of group and individual therapy. Group topics include trauma, denial, relapse prevention, co-occurring disorders, peer support and substance abuse education. There are between four and 15 clients in each group. Gender-specific groups are offered, as well. The IOP track is less time-intensive, and includes nine weekly hours of treatment. The track parallels PHP. Outpatient is offered for clients who have completed PHP or IOP. The track is scheduled per their needs. Additional offerings include art and music therapy plus attendance at recovery support meetings.
At Banyan Treatment Center, evidence-based modalities including Matrix Model , DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT are incorporated during therapy. Staff generally includes Master’s-level therapists who are CADCs, LCSWs and psychologists. Medication management and individual therapy with a psychiatrist is available for clients with co-occurring disorders.
Recreational outings include movie and beach outings. Holistic therapies include yoga, acupuncture.
Banyan Treatment Center offers a variety of highly comprehensive recovery tracks. Additionally, those working a 12-step program are allowed to check out a Buddhist based meeting while in treatment. This unique network of facilities really offers an individualized approach to recovery, and many former clients rave about the staff’s professionalism and compassion.
