Accommodations and Amenities
Banyan Sober Living accommodates about 34 clients, in two-bedroom apartments inside a large house that is surrounded by trees. The fully furnished apartments each hold four men and units include fully equipped kitchens with modern appliances, dining rooms, bathroom and a living room.
Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation. Outside the buildings are large community areas, where residents can congregate and grill food, using provided barbecues. Amenities include household and cleaning supplies, Wi-Fi, cable with HBO and the movie facilities, laundry facilities, and community computers. House managers live on-site and oversee operations.
Rules and Regulations
At Banyan Sober Living, new clients must have undergone detox and be medically stable. A six-month length of stay is encouraged, but not required. Upon arrival, the men must immediately find employment and actively seek and maintain a working relationship with an AA/NA sponsor. Those who can’t work have to establish a healthy recovery routine, which includes volunteering, going to school or participating in an outpatient program.
Weekly requirements include attending five 12-step meetings, performing household chores, working the steps and attending house meetings. Also, obtaining a home group is mandated, so that clients can build a stronger foundation in their recovery. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. At Banyan Sober Living, those who choose to use drugs or alcohol must immediately leave the premises, but they are provided with detox, residential treatment or shelter referrals. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Other services besides housing include resume assistance, job leads, and 12-step meeting referrals. For those interested in higher education, the houses are in close proximity to Eastern Michigan College, The University of Michigan and Washtenaw Community College.
