New Directions Northwest Baker House Review
The New Directions Northwest organization was established in 1983 in Oregon. It offers developmental disability, mental health and substance abuse treatment services. Baker House is one of its residential programs which began in 2008. Baker House offers inpatient treatment to adults over the age of 18. It utilizes evidence-based practices, including Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), DBT and CBT. Baker House specializes in treatment for methamphetamines, co-occurring disorders and clients who have been referred to it through the criminal justice system.
Accommodations and Food
Baker House is a 24-bed home, offering 12 female beds and 12 male beds in separate wings. Clients board four to a room. A single bedroom is available as a mental health respite room while Baker House also has two detox beds. Each wing has a living room, its own multi-person bathroom and laundry room. There is also a large dining room and a kitchen in the building. The surrounding grounds are partially fenced in to provide privacy between New Directions programs. All meals are included and three meals a day are provided, as are snacks. Each wing’s leader goes with staff to the grocery store twice a week.
Treatment and Staff
Baker House clients meet with their assigned primary drug and alcohol counselor for individual therapy a minimum of once a week for two hours. Daily groups include relapse prevention work, separate process groups for men and for women and Matrix Model workshops. Clients also take part in recreation therapy for an hour and a half each day. Optional AA/NA meetings are offered in-house for those who want them. Half day weekend outings are organized in the Baker County area. Mental health services are also provided on-site, including psychiatric assessments and medication management as needed.
Baker House staff consists of three LDACs, a therapist comes in twice a week for dual-diagnosis clients, while a psychiatrist comes in once a week for medication management.
Extras
Some additional therapeutic activities offered by Baker House include: optional religious services, exercise such as hiking, camping and walking and even shopping, fishing, cooking and picnics in a nearby park.
In Summary
Baker House has the backing of and experience of an established health organization. The array of its services is up to par with any other residential substance abuse treatment center, though its facilities may be somewhat more modest than those one would enjoy at a luxury rehab. Nevertheless, Baker House offers its services regardless of a client’s ability to pay.
