B-Houses Sober Living Review
Founded in 2015 by Daniel Regan, B-Houses provides gender-specific sober living homes in the New Jersey shore communities of Jackson and Howell. Regan is a recovering addict and he and his mother founded the non-profit CFC Loud N Clear Foundation (CFC). This organization provides a social relapse prevention program for young clients who have completed treatment and need extra help to stay clean and sober. B-Houses partner with CFC to offer sober living facilities that provide a combination of independence, support and structure, so that residents can comfortably transition from early recovery to being productive members of society.
Accommodations and Amenities
The B-Houses accommodate nine men and nine women, with a total 18-bed capacity. The women’s house overlooks a countryside setting, and is exquisitely furnished. The spacious fully equipped kitchen has wood cabinets, granite counters and sparkling new appliances. Rooms have twin beds, nightstands and closets. The men’s house is located in a pretty neighborhood, overlooking a landscape full of trees. Like the women’s house, men are paired in spacious rooms, which include twin beds, dressers, lamps, closets and framed art. Both houses provide limited single rooms, usually reserved for senior residents.
The clients purchase their own food, and prepare their own meals. Amenities include free laundry facilities, memory foam mattresses, cable, Wi-Fi, security and keypad entry, fire pits and ample parking. B-Houses provides an indoor and outdoor smoking room. House managers live on the premises in both homes.
Rules and Regulations
Potential clients must have 30 days of verified sobriety or have completed primary care at a rehab facility. Willingness is also the key. Clients must want to go to any lengths to stay clean and sober, as well as work on rebuilding their lives. Clients undergo background checks and no one convicted of violent crimes or sex offenders are admitted.
Upon arrival, clients undergo a 30-day blackout period, which includes a nine pm curfew seven days a week. They must get a sponsor or recovery coach within one week of arrival. They also have to get a job, obtain a volunteer position at CFC or enroll in school, within two weeks of arrival. Other requirements include performing household chores, which are rotated weekly. Chores range from mowing the yard, to taking out trash, to dusting, sweeping and mopping inside the house. After eating, residents must clean up after themselves. If they leave a mess, they are fined 10 dollars. Clients must be up and out of bed by 9 am weekdays, and noon on Saturdays, unless they work late shifts.
Other rules include being at the house meeting, going to regular recovery support group meetings, with the quota varying per client’s schedule, and participating in CFC’s relapse prevention program on a regular basis. Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step or SMART Recovery meetings, the latter being offered at CFC. CFC’s schedule includes recovery coaching, self-empowerment groups, a career building program, life skills workshops, peer support groups and family workshops. Clients are subject to random drug tests and failure to pass a test is grounds for immediate expulsion.
Extras
Regan is a SMART Recovery facilitator, and a motivational speaker at various high schools and middle schools in the state of New Jersey.
B-House offers two payment options. The weekly cost is $175, and the 30-day cost is $700. There is a $200 drug test fee, charged every six months, as well as a one-time $250 move-in fee.
