Azleway Substance Abuse Program Review
Founded in 1997, the Azleway Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) provides residential treatment for chemically dependent boys between the ages of 13 and 17. Set on a picturesque ranch in Big Sandy, Texas, Azleway offers not only extensive substance abuse and addiction treatment, but also dual diagnosis support for clients with co-occurring disorders. Additionally, on-site academic instruction is provided through a fully-accredited charter school.
Accommodation and Food
Clients are housed in beautiful, home-like cottages, four to a room. Boys are given ample space for belongings, and benefit from constant supervision that includes bed checks every 30 minutes. All meals are provided and prepared by on-site staff, and food is filling and nutritious. Clients are required each morning to make their beds, clean their cubicles and complete whatever weekly chore is assigned to them. They are also required to do their own laundry, which, while supervised, is a useful skill for growing boys to learn. There are sports facilities available for use, including a ROPES course with zip line, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts.
Treatment and Staff
This voluntary treatment program required boys to fully commit to their recovery and offers no second chances after a violation of house rules or if the client decides to leave before completing treatment. There is a zero tolerance policy for physical or verbal violence. Boys go through a thorough psychological and physical assessment, during which any co-occurring disorders are identified. These are treated with medication management, as well as individual therapy.
Treatment typically lasts four to six months, and includes individual therapy and group therapy. Azleway follows the 12-step model, meaning clients are exposed to meetings as well as 12-step work with a sponsor. Boys are in school each weekday from 8 am to around noon. Schooling is provided on-site. After lunch is group therapy until 4:30 pm, with the evenings spent completing homework, writing assignments, chores, attending meetings and relaxing.
Board-licensed psychiatrists, nurses, technicians, LADCs and CSWs assists with supervision and treatment of clients.
Extras
Azleway also provides residential treatment for younger at-risk boys aged six to 17 in one of their many beautiful cottages on the ranch. Adoption services, including family counseling and transitional living for those completing a program are also available.

Azleway provides a wonderfully stable and highly structured environment for teenage boys struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. With a beautiful, peaceful setting in which to focus on recovery, and a multi-disciplinary staff available to cater to a range of needs, clients at Azleway are sure to find the effective treatment. While there is no aftercare once treatment is completed, the affordable cost means that those requiring additional support can take advantage of a referral and have additional needs met.
