awakeningsAwakenings Sober Living for Women Review

With its meditation rock garden, small prayer chapel and gazebo for fellowship, Awakenings Sober Living for Women in the heart of the Texas Hill Country provides a deeply spiritual environment that encourages meditation and prayer hand-in-hand with sobriety. Awakenings accommodates eight women in a self-described “safe haven” built on a 12-step foundation. Residents here find empowerment through cooperative, rather than authoritarian, relationships. The mantra: kindness, compassion and empathy. Awakenings is owned and operated by Peace of Mind Recovery Solutions, which operates New Beginnings Recovery House for Women, also in Kerrville, Texas.

Accommodations and Amenities

Awakenings is located on 1.6 secluded, fenced acres. Its four double–occupancy rooms are decorated in earth tones, and hardwood floors throughout the house create a woodsy, comfortable ambiance. The living room and dining area flow together in one large space, with a fireplace, plenty of comfortable seating, a flat screen TV, wireless Internet, a desktop computer and a house phone. There are two bathrooms, both with shower and bathtub, and laundry facilities on the premises.

The kitchen has a ceiling fan, parquet floor and an abundance of counter and storage space and is equipped with modern appliances. All dishware, silverware and utensils in addition to bedding—except for bath towels—and all paper goods are provided by the house. Residents are encouraged to bring their own lock boxes for medication, laundry hamper, extra hangers, Tupperware with name labels to store food in the refrigerator, and storage bins that fit under the bed. Laundry detergent and shampoo, conditioner and bath soap have to be brought by residents.

The meditation rock garden, the gazebo where residents join in fellowship, and a chapel for spiritual connection and step work, all create the unique ambiance that sets Awakenings apart from many other houses in the sober living-abundant area of Texas Hill Country. At this facility, even meditation is mandatory five days a week.

Rules and Regulations

At 8 pm every Wednesday, residents are required to attend a house meeting; there are also mandatory on-site 12-step meetings. Curfew is at 10 pm Sundays through Wednesdays and at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Random drug tests may occur at any time.

A zero-tolerance policy exists for serious behaviors that result in eviction: abuse of personal medication, refusal to submit to drug testing, stealing, threatening or bullying other residents, and failure to follow the house rules after several warnings have been issued.

Visitors to the property must be pre-approved by the house manager. Prescribed medications must be cleared with the house manager before admission.

Half of the $250 deposit is refundable if the client stays more than three months. The other half is used to purchase the house’s paper goods and miscellaneous items for residents. Rent is non-refundable if a resident relapses.

Extras

Residents are eligible for discount membership to the local gym and the Kroc Center fitness facility with no enrollment fee or contract. Ride-sharing can be arranged.

In Summary

For women who practice mindfulness or who seek a spiritual component to their recovery, Awakenings may be an excellent choice. The facility is secure with 24-hour on-site management and provides a supportive community structure that inspires residents to remain clean and sober. The values of compassion, kindness and support make it similar to a Buddhist retreat in some ways. Indeed, residents will find plenty of places where they can practice meditation and contemplate their lives.
