Awakenings Review

Awakenings offers outpatient care in Agoura Hills, a small scenic city on the border of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Awakenings opened its doors five years ago and uses a variety of evidence-based and holistic practices to provide cutting-edge treatment at the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care.

Each client receives a customized treatment plan that may incorporate trauma-informed care (TIC) and dual-diagnosis support for co-occurring disorders. Awakenings also operates a sober living home that can accommodate clients while they complete their outpatient treatment.

Awakenings was founded by Dr. Shari Corbit, a psychologist who previously served as Vice President of Promises Treatment Centers in Malibu, and Peter Corbitt, a certified clinical neurotherapist.

Treatment and Staff

Awakenings offers dedicated treatment tracks for mental health, eating disorders, substance abuse and chronic pain management. After an assessment, clients may be assigned groups in one or more treatment tracks. PHP clients attend group therapy from 9:30am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday. IOP clients usually attend group therapy for three hours, three times a week, and morning, afternoon and evening groups are usually available. All clients have individual therapy at least once a week and a neurofeedback session each day they’re attending treatment.

Most clients are in treatment for 90 days; many PHP clients step-down to IOP treatment as they progress. Awakenings is experienced treating significant mental health diagnoses, including severe eating disorders and bi-polar and schizo-affective disorders. In addition to neurofeedback, therapy uses CBT, DBT and alpha-stimulation. Clients also participate in mindfulness training and art therapy.

Groups are led by CATCs and MFTs and clients usually have outside psychiatrists with whom they meet at least twice a week.

Awakenings works with all clients to identify a 12-step fellowship to attend. Clients must attend at least two meetings a week and pursue sponsorship. PHP clients also meet with a life coach to help them work towards professional and educational goals.

Extras

Awakenings has a strong family program that includes family therapy and a weekly family support group that meets each Wednesday evening. Clients can also order concierge treatments, such as acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic and Heller Structural Integration work, for an additional fee.

Awakenings is pet-friendly, and there is no size-limit on dogs allowed in the treatment center. For aftercare, Awakenings offers a weekly alumni meeting and former clients are welcome to drop into a treatment group each week.

In Summary

Awakenings boasts dual-licenses for the treatment of mental health and substance abuse. Its targeted treatment plans use a variety of neuroscientific as well as holistic treatment modalities that help clients restructure their physiology as well as their behavior for optimal success in recovery. By requiring clients to participate in 12-step fellowships and offering a family program, Awakenings ensures that clients leave treatment with a strong network of social support and understanding.
