Awaken the Self Review
Situated about 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles in the city of Pasadena, California, Awaken the Self is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of young adult clients struggling with depression, anxiety and stressful life events as well as children and adolescents with developmental disorders. As the private practice of Natalie Moore, a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern (MFTi), the facility is part of the Tree of Life Healing holistic organization, and supervised by Chris Tickner, MFT. Awaken the Self believes in treating “the whole person” with a focus on the mind, body and spirit.
Treatment and Staff
The treatment goal at Awaken the Self is to immediately alleviate discomfort by providing clients with healthy coping skills, all the while investigating the root causes of the condition or issue. To this end, Moore offers a treatment approach that utilizes a wide range of evidence-based therapies like CBT, mindfulness-based therapy as well as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF/CBT) to treat children and adolescents impacted by trauma. Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is also offered for couples with a focus on attachment. In addition, Moore incorporates Buddhist principles and holistic methods like meditation, mindfulness, yoga, exercise and nutrition.
Before beginning treatment, clients engage in a free 15-minute phone consultation followed by an in-person assessment to help Moore develop the most effective treatment program customized to meet the specific needs of the client. The length and frequency of treatment varies depending on the progress and specific needs of the client, though Moore recommends weekly 50 minute sessions for individuals. Couples and family therapy sessions are often longer, as there are more parties involved in the process. To this end, 75 and 90 minute sessions are available.
Natalie Moore holds a Master’s degree from Sophia University, which specializes in holistic psychotherapy. As an MFTi, Moore is working towards licensing. Since Moore is not a licensed physician, medication management is not available.
In addition to treating individuals with depression and anxiety, Moore also offers expertise in the field of developmental disorders. Specifically Moore provides floortime therapy for children with autism.
While Awaken the Self only accepts private pay, Moore does provide clients with a “super bill” for reimbursement from an out-of-network PPO insurer.
