Awake and AwareAwake and Aware Review

Awake and Aware is holistic mental health center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Founded in 2009, Awake and Aware believes “change happens over time with consistent and directed efforts to create new ways of seeing.” It helps clients develop these new ways of seeing through a combination of mindfulness and meditation and evidence-based modalities such as DBT and EMDR. Awake and Aware also offers individual and family therapy for adults and adolescents.

Treatment and Staff

The therapeutic foundation of Awake and Aware is DBT. Clients suffering from substance abuse can enter its short-term intensive trauma treatment program, Healing in The Desert, or its eight-month outpatient DBT skills program. Healing in The Desert is ideal for clients whose substance use may be impacted by trauma. Clients are assessed by a Master’s-level therapist and Doctor of Oriental Medicine and given a treatment plan that may include individual therapy with DBT, EMDR and CBT and group classes in trauma-informed yoga and art therapy. Clients attend Healing in The Desert four days a week for five hours a day. Treatment plans last 30, 45 or 60 days, and clients then step down to continue treatment in the DBT program.

The DBT program is eight months long. For the first four months, clients meet at least once a week with a Master’s-level therapist, usually an LPC or LCSW, for individual therapy. Their primary therapist may also include weekly attendance at peer support meetings, such as AA/NA or SMART Recovery, in their treatment plan. After four months, clients then add weekly DBT group therapy to their schedule. Groups usually have eight to 10 participants.

In addition to Master’s-level therapists and the Doctor of Oriental Medicine, the treatment team at Awake and Aware includes an LADAC and psychiatrist for dual diagnosis support. Clients in need of medical supervision for mental health disorders are also referred to a nearby clinic or hospital for additional treatment.

Extras

Clients may also have herbal medicine, Vipassana meditation and massage and other somatic therapies in their treatment plans.

When clients are preparing to graduate from the program, they create an aftercare plan with their primary therapist, which may include additional peer support meetings and/or asking the treatment team to follow up with them periodically.

In Summary

Awake and Aware provides structured, holistic treatment for mental health and substance abuse using DBT and a variety experiential modalities. Its trauma treatment program, Healing in The Desert, and DBT skills program allow clients to form close bonds with their therapists and increase self-awareness as they create new coping mechanisms and decision-making skills.
