Aviva Family and Children’s Services Review

Founded in Los Angeles in 1915, Aviva Family and Children’s Services is a multi-faceted behavioral health non-profit providing affordable treatment to families struggling with addiction, mental health issues, domestic violence and more. Treatment programs are largely individualized and focus on keeping children and parents together in a healthy environment. In addition to its outpatient and wraparound services, the organization also offers residential substance abuse treatment for abused and neglected teenagers.

Accommodations and Food

The facility is located in Hollywood and has a total of 36 beds available for teens in comfortable, dorm-style accommodations. Each room is shared between several clients, each with twin beds, dressers, desks, windows and basic decorations—residents are also encouraged to decorate their doors and rooms with appropriate adornments as well. In addition to the rooms themselves the facility also has common outdoor areas, shared lounges, cable TV, therapy rooms and a cafeteria.

Throughout their stay, clients are served three healthy meals a day, plus snacks.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, clients go through an intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs. Because the program is aimed more at housing former foster children and providing behavioral and mental health support, on-site detox services are not provided. Though treatment plans are individualized, each generally includes individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices and trauma-informed care, including Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). The specific modalities and lengths of stay can vary significantly.

Other groups cover a range of topics such as anger management, family therapy, life skills, financial education, emotional processing and more. Support for co-occurring disorders may also be provided, as are support services for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse as well. Treatment can include CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). While 12-step participation is not strictly required, those seeking nearby meetings can get referrals upon request.

The staff at Aviva Family and Children’s Services includes LCSWs, LMFTs, CADCs, art therapists, psychologists and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Other services include support for children recently out of juvenile hall or the penal system, as well as foster family and adoption services for younger children who have been abandoned or orphaned. Wraparound services and outpatient care plans are also available for clients who discharge from residential treatment or for those who need aftercare. These services may also include in-home treatment for families as well, including parenting classes and skills workshops.

In Summary

Overall, Aviva Family and Children’s Services is a well-rounded organization providing a whole host of affordable services to children and families in need. Programs include evidence-based care and trauma-informed practices designed to bring any child back from the brink, no matter what the issue is. Although this is a fairly niche program for lower-income clientele, the services provided by Aviva Family and Children’s Services’ residential program are invaluable for those who need them in the LA area.
