Austin Oaks Hospital is a large behavioral health hospital located in the heart of Austin, Texas. Austin Oaks Hospital provides both inpatient and outpatient treatment for children, adolescents and adults dealing with mental health issues, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. In addition to an 80-bed inpatient unit, the 13-acre oak-lined Austin Oaks campus is home to a 6,000 square foot outpatient services building. It offers both Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for adults and adolescents.
Treatment and Staff
The Austin Oaks Hospital outpatient programs can serve as a step down for those who have completed inpatient care or a primary option for those who are stable enough to live at home during treatment. Adult PHP clients attend group therapy six hours a day, Monday through Friday. Clients typically complete PHP in a week or two, then transition to the IOP. IOP clients begin by attending group therapy three to four hours a day, three days each week, then gradually decrease according to their individualized treatment plan. Clients in both programs have individual therapy as needed.
The Adolescent PHP is designed for those aged 13 to 17 and runs Monday through Fridas from 8 am to 3:30 pm. The schedule includes weekly physician visits, four groups a day and weekly family therapy. Since the clients are usually still in school, the appropriate grade-level coursework is offered through the University of Texas Charter School. As clients improve they can step down to IOP which includes three groups a week and focuses on applying new skills to help clients transition back into the community of their school, friends and family. Groups provide tips and resources for communication skill building, anger management and conflict resolution.
Therapy at Austin Oaks Hospital uses CBT, DBT and the 12-step framework as well as modern web-based and holistic methods to compliment traditional therapies. Participation in 12-step meetings outside of treatment hours, such as AA/NA, SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery, is encouraged.
The treatment team includes a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, Master’s-level therapists—such as LPCs and LSCWs—and case managers.
Extras
Holistic therapies include fitness and nutrition counseling, yoga, art and massage therapy.
Families have the opportunity to participate in education and support groups to increase their understanding of addiction and mental illness.
