Austin Center for Psychological Care Review

Established in 2013, Austin Center for Psychological Care is Austin’s first independently-owned practice to focus on the use of DBT for mental health and substance abuse treatment. DBT, developed by Dr. Marsha Lineham, helps clients improve the quality of their lives through instructional sessions of its four modules: core mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation and distress tolerance.

Clients can participate in a five-week DBT Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or a weekly DBT skills group. Austin CPC also coordinates care with clients’ outside psychiatrists and has a medical director who consults on client treatment plans for dual diagnosis support.

Treatment and Staff

Austin CPC clients have mental health diagnoses, and substance abuse is treated as a secondary diagnosis. The center is experienced working with clients with numerous co-occurring disorders, including eating disorders and spectrum disorders.

IOP clients can attend a morning or evening program. Clients have group therapy Mondays through Thursdays from 9 am to 12 pm or 1 to 4pm. The duration of the IOP is five weeks. The on-going weekly group meets Tuesdays at 5 pm.

The treatment team at Austin CPC is made up of LCSWs who are happy to work with clients’ outside physicians, therapists and psychiatrists to offer coordinated care. Clients can also authorize Austin CPC to speak with family members about their treatment.

Austin CPC recommends that substance abuse clients commit to a peer support program, such as 12-step or SMART Recovery, and helps clients locate local meetings.

Extras

Austin CPC also runs a six-week CBT skills group to help clients combat insomnia.

In Summary

Austin Center for Psychological Care has intensive and on-going DBT skills programs that help clients learn the emotional regulation and interpersonal skills proven to effectively treat mental health and co-occurring disorders. To further help them create satisfying lives in recovery, the center is able to consult with clients’ outside treatment teams as well as help clients locate local peer support meetings.
