Assessment Counseling and Educational ServicesAssessment Counseling and Educational Services Review

As a non-profit based in Salt Lake City, Utah, Assessment Counseling and Educational Services (ACES) provides outpatient care and counseling to address substance abuse issues. Aside from that primary focus, the facility also offers domestic violence classes, victim services and a host of other offerings.

Treatment and Staff

ACES’ outpatient program consists of two group therapy sessions a week at its central facility, an office building in Salt Lake City. These sessions are based primarily on Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) as well as CBT, with no more than 10 clients in attendance at any one session. There is no 12-step focus at ACES. Groups are held Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 pm, each for an hour.

Clients do have access to individual therapy sessions though they are not a staple of the program. These can be arranged by separate appointment. Typically, ACES’ program lasts 16 weeks. Those attending as part of a court mandate work out a length of program during their intake evaluation to make sure their requirements are met. ACES does have an aftercare program as well, which takes the form of clients being able to attend group sessions at their own choosing for a reduced cost.

These outpatient substance abuse sessions are led by LADCs. The other programs, including the domestic violence sessions and victim services, are led by Master’s-level counselors. There is also a clinical supervisor on staff and two interns from the nearby University of Utah. Since there is no medical doctor or psychiatrist on staff. Thus, clients seeking a medical detox or dual diagnosis care must be referred to another facility during intake.

Extras

In addition to their outpatient program, ACES also offers special counseling sessions and educational classes. There is a domestic violence treatment which includes a psychosocial evaluation, a risk assessment class and CBT to address topics like anger triggers, stress management, communication skills and relationship clarification. These classes never host more than eight total clients. Additionally, there are victim services which offer care to victims of domestic violence. These evaluations and group sessions are free of charge. ACES also serves the local community by offering specialty education classes which are held in bi-lingual sessions, addressing topics like anger management and parenting.

In Summary

While the services offered at Assessment Counseling and Educational Services are fairly basic, its outpatient program is affordable and well-versed in trusted recovery methods. Furthermore, clients have access to many other programs through the facility as well. Those in need of more intensive care may need to look elsewhere, but for those seeking a great basic outpatient program in the area ACES is a good fit.
