Aspiro Group Review

The Aspiro Group of Sandy, Utah is an adventure therapy program for adolescents, young adults and their families. Treatment consists of therapy in both an individual and group setting, education and therapeutic activities. Programming is based on the Aspiro Model for Change that incorporates evidence-based approaches focusing on the client’s strengths and setting achievable goals in order to help rebuild self esteem and set clients up for success.

Accommodations and Food

A majority of the program is spent with the clients exploring different parts of Utah. The young men and women learn how to use camping equipment and how to build shelters for themselves while sleeping outside. However, there is a main base camp that the clients return to each week that consists of a three-section building with bunk beds, showers, a kitchen and a dining hall. To remain consistent with the outdoor education aspect of the program, the base camp doesn’t have electricity and certainly doesn’t have any Wifi or TV.

All the food is provided by Aspiro, and along the way the clients begin to learn how to prepare healthy and balanced meals for themselves. There is a high priority for all clients to remain properly fueled throughout their journey, and the program gives them fresh fruits and vegetables daily, and supplies them with foods like pastas, tortillas, salmon or tuna, granola and oatmeal, amongst other options, every week upon returning to base camp to restock on their items.

Treatment and Staff

The adolescent and young adult groups are always separated. The younger clients’ treatment focuses on issues like anxiety, self esteem and learning leadership skills. The young adults address struggles they’ve had in relationships, depression or anxiety, or dealing with a life change, like heading to college. On a daily basis the clients are faced with a number of challenges that they have to handle and navigate. These programs are designed for a number of concerns that include but are not limited to ADD, substance abuse, self harm behaviors, learning disorders and difficulties, and trauma.

Aspiro uses myriad evidence-based approaches that are individualized to the client’s specific needs. Clients can expect group and individual therapy, therapeutic journaling, regular physical activity and psychological testing. Medication management can also be facilitated. Treatment includes EMDR, CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Family Systems Therapy, collaborative problem solving, and methods to improve social and behavioral functions.

The staff of Aspiro are Master’s-level clinicians who are LCSWs, LMFTs, LMHCs, psychiatrists, RNs, medical doctors and wilderness therapists.

Extras

There is a program for families and parents of the clients that includes counseling and therapeutic activities.

In Summary

The Aspiro Group provides the space for clients to figure out who they are. They also learn how to be self sufficient, brave and accountable. Young men and women and adolescents leave the program with a renewed sense of self and with the feeling that they can accomplish anything they put their minds to.
