Grand RapidsArbor Circle Review

Arbor Circle is a non-profit community health organization with two locations in Michigan’s second largest city, Grand Rapids. It was created in 1996 after four facilities merged together, with roots dating back to 1945. This outpatient program for substance abuse treatment strives to help clients to through therapy, coping skills and a healthy support network.

Treatment and Staff

AC offers several locations with two in Grand Rapids – the Main Campus on Ball Avenue and Counseling at 36th Street. The Newaygo office is on 82nd street. Individual, family and group counseling are offered to help adults dealing with alcohol or substance abuse issues. Detox is not available on-site, but referral can  be made to local facilities. While dual diagnosis support is offered during individual therapy sessions, there is no psychiatrist on staff. Clients with co-occurring disorders need to seek outside help if they require medication.

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is available, as well as a personalized outpatient program that an be designed to suit the clients needs. IOP meets three times a week, for three hour sessions. This includes one hour of individual therapy, as well as three group therapy sessions. Group sizes are usually between 10 to 15 clients, covering topics such as relapse prevention, coping skills, anger management, trauma and grief.

Individual therapy is offered to clients under 18 years of age who struggle with substance abuse issues. AC’s Newaygo County counseling services include similar programs, but include specialized groups and services those for pregnant women and mothers.

The staff consists of CADCs, LCSWs and Master’s-level psychologists. A therapy team is assigned to each client for the duration of their treatment, as well as those involved with child protective services. Childcare is provided for free on-site for women who are in treatment.

Extras

AC provides court-ordered drug and alcohol assessment services, a driver’s license retention program and a highway safety course for those who have had drug or alcohol-related moving violations.

Community drug and alcohol education programs are provided in schools and after-school programs, sometimes free of charge.

In Summary

On a simple outpatient basis, Arbor Circle provides a flexible, therapeutic approach to recovery. Keeping cultural differences in mind, this facility offers affordable treatment to people of all ages as well as pregnant women and mothers in the community.
