Anne Arundel County Health Department Review

The Anne Arundel County Health Department in Annapolis, Maryland offers an adult outpatient program for substance abuse that includes Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opiate abuse. They also have adolescent and family support programs for those seeking treatment, therapy and addiction education. Additionally, they work with a large network of nearby treatment facilities to provide referrals and subsidize treatment for county residents who need services not offered at their clinics.

Treatment and Staff

Adult clients seeking treatment at Anne Arundel must first have an intake assessment at the Adult Addiction Clinic, which includes a full physical and interview about their health history. Following the initial exam, an individualized treatment plan is developed. A weekly medical program is created for those who are looking for drug replacement therapy for opiate addiction. Either methadone or Suboxone is administered and monitored by medical staff. Participants in this program are also required to attend regular individual sessions and are welcomed into the clinic’s outpatient program. Those who are not in need of medication-assisted treatment can take part in the clinic’s community outpatient treatment program, which offers group, individual and family therapy services. This program may also provide funding for those who require inpatient treatment, if they qualify.

Anne Arundel also offers adolescent substance abuse counseling for individuals ages 12 to 17. This program focuses on early intervention, psychoeducation and therapy. If additional treatment is desired, a referral to an outpatient or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in the county health network is available. The amount of time spent in group or individual therapy sessions varies, depending on the individual.

The staff at the Adult Addiction Clinic and Behavioral Health Building is made up of medical doctors, LCDCs, LCSWs who specialize in chemical dependency, MFTs and nurses who administer medicine. There are also psychiatrists on staff to assist with intake and program referrals.

Extras

The Opportunity for Treatment Fund (OTF) is available to help pay for substance abuse treatment for Anne Arundel County residents who meet low-income guidelines. Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and their families are also entitled to free mental health and substance abuse treatment in the county network.

The Anne Arundel County Health Department’s Adult Addiction Program offers free training and certification to community members related to the use of intranasal naloxone, a prescription medicine used to reverse an opioid overdose. The training is for family members, friends and associates of any individual who is using and at risk of overdosing on heroin or opioid pain medications.

In Summary

Anne Arundel County Health Department is a large operation with many options for treatment and referral. For someone in need of medication-assisted treatment, this facility offers a reliable and affordable treatment plan. Through a network of care providers and funding sources, comprehensive treatment plans are available for those who take the required steps.
