Anka Behavioral Health Review

Anka Behavioral Health opened as a small behavioral health facility in 1973 that served children and their families in Concord, California. Now Anka is a thriving nonprofit that provides substance abuse treatment at more than a dozen locations throughout California—providing residential and outpatient services in structured settings. Specializing in dual diagnosis treatment for men and women, Anka offers the best and newest treatment methods for those seeking help in a warm and supportive environment.

Accommodations and Food

Anka’s residential and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are located throughout California. The facilities are all single-family homes situated in quiet neighborhoods. They have seven to 16 beds with men and women in the same location. Rooms are shared between two clients. A comfortable bed and a dresser or closet is provided for each client at all locations.

There are shared common areas for clients to watch TV on assigned days, and backyards where, in between group meetings or while on break, residents can smoke or step out for fresh air. Personal cell phones are locked up with staff during every client’s stay, but a floor phone is available during designated times for all to use.

Clients are assigned household chores, including planning meals, cooking and kitchen clean-up. Staff accompanies the residents to the grocery store weekly and supervises meal planning and preparation. Special dietary requests can be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

Anka offers a highly structured residential program, with different levels broken down into three-week sections. Every client enters treatment at level one. After the first cycle of three weeks, depending on the client’s progress, more free time and privileges are incorporated into in the schedule. There are six levels to complete in order to graduate from the program.

The average length of stay is approximately six months. A typical daily schedule includes a drug and alcohol education session, group therapy and individual therapy. If therapy isn’t scheduled for some individuals, they work on assigned tasks, such as a house recycling project, daily meditation and journaling. In the evening, clients attend in-house AA or NA meetings.

Though the treatment doesn’t solely focus on the 12 steps, meetings are included as a method of treatment in addition to therapy. Therapy methods run the gamut and may involve CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR. Anka’s residential programs serve those with co-occurring conditions  and, depending on the individual needs of each client, dual diagnosis support and medication management may be included in therapy schedules.

IOP involves clients meeting a minimum of twice a week for two hours for group and individual therapy sessions. Relapse prevention is often a focus of group meetings, as well as life outside of treatment and coping skills.

Anka employs over 1,000 highly-qualified addiction and mental health professionals. Overseen by a leadership team of medical doctors, social workers and therapists, the residential and outpatient substance abuse staff consists of addiction specialists, certified counselors, marriage and family therapists (MFT)s, psychiatrists and psychologists.

Extras

Yoga is offered to residential clients, where available, and outings to the local gym take place three to four times a week. House activities are regularly scheduled, including softball tournaments and tennis. Family members and friends are welcome to visit every day between the hours of 4 pm to 5 pm.

In Summary

Anka Behavioral Health delivers affordable, accessible substance abuse treatment all over California. By setting achievable goals and offering strong support throughout the recovery process, they have been able to achieve high success rates at their many locations.
