Andromeda Transcultural Health Review
Dr. Ricardo Galbis, a Cuban-born psychiatrist who specializes in community heath, opened Andromeda Transcultural Health in 1970. He was responding to the overwhelming demand for quality medical and mental health care from the undeserved communities in Washington, D.C. From humble beginnings at a single facility staffed only by volunteers, Andromeda has stuck to its mission of giving excellent care and compassion to anyone, regardless of their background. For more than four decades, it has provided residents of the nation’s capital with an affordable outpatient substance abuse program.
Treatment and Staff
Andromeda offers two levels of treatment exclusively for residents of the D.C. area. An off-site evaluation is required before starting treatment, and the intake assessment determines what level of treatment a client needs. Psychiatric assessment and medication management for those with co-occurring conditions are available at Andromeda. Those requiring detox or residential treatment are referred to another facility.
Level one outpatient includes four to six hours of treatment per week, with group therapy at least twice a week for two hours at a time. Groups are no larger than 15 clients, with one counselor per group. Level two is considered Intensive Outpatient (IOP), where clients attend group and individual therapy sessions 10 to 12 hours per week. Groups take place Monday though Friday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Therapy sessions use CBT and DBT, combined with the 12-step model, and AA meetings are offered on-site. Group topics include coping skills, the disease concept of addiction and relapse prevention. Individual sessions in both programs can be scheduled around the client’s availability.
LADCs oversee group and individual therapy sessions and clinical psychiatrists manage any additional treatment.
Extras
Andromeda offers a family support program for clients, as well as referrals for food and clothing services for those who qualify.
