The Anderson Center Review

Located about 40 miles west of Indianapolis, The Anderson Center operates out of St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital in Anderson, Indiana. The rehab was originally established as a 12-bed hospital in 1912 by Dr. Edgar Cox, who wanted to help those struggling to stop drinking. After more than a century and many renovations, relocations and changes in sponsorship, this facility now offers adolescent inpatient substance abuse treatment as well as detox and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults and adolescents.

Accommodations and Food

The Anderson Center adolescent inpatient program addresses mental health and chemical dependency issues for youths ages 11 to 18. There are 28 beds for those in the residential treatment program and 12 beds in the detox unit. Rooms are shared between residents of the same gender and general age and each room has its own bathroom. The program has a common area with a pool table, games and a flat screen TV that is available during the evenings.

Meals are served cafeteria-style in a dining area for those in the adolescent unit, while those in detox are served in their rooms. It is a working hospital, so the food comes from the cafeteria, but meals are well-balanced and nutritious. Special dietary needs can be accommodated, if necessary.

Treatment and Staff

After an initial assessment by a member of the medical staff, clients are given a treatment plan. They begin with medically-supervised detox or go straight to the residential or IOP programs. If detox is determined to be the best option, the process is usually between five to seven days and is supervised by physicians and nurses. Detox clients are encouraged to attend on-site AA/NA meetings.

The Anderson Center uses the 12 steps as a guideline, but also offers alternative methods like the SMART Recovery. Treatment methods like CBT, DBT are used regularly for both group and individual sessions. Additionally, they believe holistic treatment can be useful, including massage or aromatherapy. These services are provided at an additional cost. The Anderson Center offers specialized therapy options for those with co-occurring disorders. These include schema-focused therapy, which is a type of MRT, and STEPPS (System Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving). Both methods are used in individual sessions.

A typical day of treatment in the adolescent unit includes a meeting after breakfast, followed by a four-hour school day. The Anderson Center Day School Program integrates educational and therapeutic services and features age-appropriate lessons and drug and alcohol eduction, taught by licensed teachers. Lunch is from noon to 1 pm, followed by an hour of recreation time outside or in the fitness center. The afternoon concludes with a group therapy session until 4 pm, followed by an hour of free time and dinner at 5 pm. If individual or family therapy is requested or recommended, those sessions generally happen after the group day ends.

IOP treatment incorporates the 12 steps and offers two schedules. The morning session meets from 8:30 am to noon, three days a week; the evening program is three days a week from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. These schedules are flexible for those who are working or in school. Both the morning and afternoon schedules include group therapy sessions and opportunities for individual therapy or meetings with a nurse or physician, if necessary. The Anderson Center also recommends outside AA/NA meetings for clients to attend and offers additional on-site meetings on some evenings.

The staff at The Anderson Center consists of addiction specialists, certified addiction counselors and psychologists and is managed by a physician who serves as medical director.
